Xerox the technology firm is helping universities to save money
A scheme by printer and toner cartridge manufacturer Xerox to help colleges and universities save money has seen outgoing print costs at the higher-learning institutions drop by 30 per cent, according to the firm.
With IT leaders of these colleges and universities facing the same cost-efficiency challenges as major corporate chief information officers are in the wake of the global economic downturn, the company has made efforts to help them reduce their costs.
Canada's University of British Colombia (UBC) was one of the institutions which was helped by Xerox, and is expecting to save approximately million (£5.1 million) over six years in their managed print services (MPS) departments.
Pierre Ouillet, UBC's vice-president of finance, resources and operations, said: "Xerox MPS will simplify how we manage documents, making our print operations more productive and cost effective.
"It improves nearly every aspect of the document lifecycle including printing, copying, scanning, faxing, design and delivery of print materials as well as electronic storage and retrieval. This means printing and document management campus-wide will be consistent, affordable and reliable."

Xerox The printer and ink cartridge manufacturer received a total of 706 US patents last year.
Xerox has announced that the number of patents it received last year represented a 16 per cent increase from the previous year.
This puts the global printer manufacturer among the top 25 corporate receivers of patents.
The company highlighted the fact that many of its patents had been for new technologies which had featured among its released products this year and that many were the foundations for the next generation of printers, ink cartridges and services that the company will offer.
Sophie Vandebroek, Xerox chief technology officer and president of the manufacturer's Innovation Group, said: "It's critical to our customers' success that we continue to innovate. We innovate today to secure the future.
"It is at the very core of what Xerox does. More than 2,400 employees, past and present, have been granted five or more patents - an extraordinary accomplishment."
One of the 706 US patents the company received last year was for the solid ink ink cartridges in the new Xerox ColorQube 9200, which has been hailed as an ink and energy-efficient unit.

International printer and office supplies manufacturer Xerox has posted high earnings for the fourth quarter of 2009 which the company say "exceed expectations".
The firm announced that it had achieved an "operating cash flow" of 7 million (£599.76 million).
Its fourth quarter total revenue was .2 billion and although this represented a three per cent year-on-year decline from 2008, fears of a much larger fall caused by the global recession seem to have been unfounded.
Ursula Burns, chief executive of Xerox, said: "We delivered a strong close to a difficult year, with solid operational results that reflect our disciplined approach to generating cash and reducing costs.
"However, we believe revenue will continue to be under pressure until there is a more sustainable economic recovery."
Earlier this month, Ms Burns was named one of the top African-American executives in the US.

Xerox has announced a new deal which will see its latest printer ink technology utilised in the burgeoning 'printing on demand' sector.
Just recently, a leading London bookshop became the first European owner of new technology enabling retailers to print off books on-site according to customer orders.
Now, it has been confirmed that Xerox has teamed up with Books on Demand to provide the printer ink for the innovative Espresso Book Machine.
Making use of the latest printer technology, the partnership will ensure that bespoke books can be printed off on demand for a cost of less than one US cent per page and will help retailers produce around 40,000 paperbacks on-site every year.
Announcing the partnership, Eric Armour, the president of the Global Business Group within the Xerox Corporation, said: "Xerox has provided a variety of digital book solutions for nearly 20 years.
"Working with On Demand Books, we can apply Xerox technology to meet the incredible opportunities that exist within this industry."
Founded in 1906, Xerox now makes a range of photocopiers and printers, including those under the Phaser Brand, aimed specifically at the consumer, rather than the corporate, market.

The chief executive of global printer and ink cartridge manufacturing giant Xerox has been named as one of the top 75 most powerful women in business.
Ursula Burns, who was named as chief executive of the company in July 2009, was awarded the honour by Black Enterprise magazine, as she was named as a leader in her field with "unduplicated success".
Xerox have had executives on previous lists by the magazine and in 2005 had three of its senior management officials announced as among the top African-American executives in the US.
Ms Burns joined the company in 1980 as a mechanical engineering summer intern.
Following the internship, she remained at the firm, eventually achieving an executive position in 2000 when she was named senior vice president of corporate strategic services.
A representative of the magazine commented on the list, saying that it was made up of "women responsible for developing product lines, positioning brands, operating core business areas, generating revenues, and with profit & loss oversight at the highest levels".

Xerox has unveiled its new cartridge-free printer in Hawaii.
Demand for the Xerox ColorQube 9200 Series has soared on the islands, according to the state offices of the global printer manufacturer.
The device uses crayon-like solid ink sticks which are then melted inside the printer and delivered through miniscule nozzles in the print head.
Xerox estimates that this technology cuts the cost of printing colour pages by 62 per cent compared to regular inkjet printers.
In addition, a study carried out by the firm and reviewed by the Rochester Institute of Technology found that the ColorQube's design generates 90 per cent less waste due to its lack of ink cartridges.
It also uses nine per cent less energy in its lifecycle, according to the study.
Glenn Sexton, vice-president and general manager of Xerox Hawaii, said: "In Hawaii, the demand for ColorQube has been phenomenal.
"Within the first week … we bypassed our sales goals by more than 100 per cent. Customers have been asking for a machine that's not only environmentally friendly, but helps decrease overhead costs. ColorQube clearly is the answer."

Xerox has signed a million (£23.7 million) partnership with the University of British Columbia (UBC) that will save the institution million over six years, with better managed document and printer ink services across its campus.
The new enterprise print services deal will aim to allow staff, students and faculty to teach and learn more effectively through the efficient use of technology.
Pierre Ouillet, UBC vice president of finance, resources and operations, commented: "We chose Xerox because of its customer service leadership, proven experience, ability to drive cost savings, environmental benefits and consistent processes while creating the platform for document management."
He went on to say that the partnership will cover every aspect of the document lifecycle including printing, copying, scanning, faxing, design and delivery of print materials.
Earlier this week the Wall Street Journal reported that organisations around the world are increasingly outsourcing ink printing to copier companies such as Xerox and HP, boosting the office machine-making market despite the economic downturn.
