History of Waterman pens

In 1883, insurance broker Lewis Waterman had bought a new fountain pen in preparation for signing an important new contract. The pen refused to work and a competing broker jumped in and sealed the deal instead. And that was the driving force behind Waterman pens, Waterman fountain pens and Waterman ink pens. Determined never to suffer a similar fate again, Waterman began to make the now world-renowned Waterman pens in his brother’s workshop. Lewis Waterman used the capillarity principle which allowed air to induce a steady and even flow of ink. He christened his brand new Waterman pen "the Regular," decorated it with wood accents, and obtained a patent for it in 1884. By 1899 Lewis Waterman had opened a Montreal factory offering a variety of Waterman pen designs. The Treaty of Versailles was signed using a solid gold Waterman pen, a far cry from the day Lewis Waterman lost his important contract due to a leaky fountain pen.

Waterman Paris fountain pen company is celebrating its anniversary with the introduction of a new limited edition pen named the Edson 125 ans. It was created to mark the 125th anniversary of Lewis Edson Waterman founding the company in 1883, the year when he is also said to have invented the world's first fountain pen. The nib of the €1850 (£1639) pen is solid 18-carat gold which has been plated in rhodium to increase fluidity and the pen itself is made of palladium with art-deco, blue lacquered designs along the body. "Designed at Waterman's Saint Herblain centre in France and assembled with supreme artistry, Edson 125 ans blends timeless luxury and bold modernity," Waterman Paris said. "Just 1883 pieces, each one etched with a distinct number on the side of the clip in homage to 125 years of original creation".
