BBC To Host Lively Ink Cartridges Debate

The BBC is on the lookout for people who would be willing to take part in a televised discussion on ink cartridges.

Computeractive has been asked to put feelers out for the BBC in the hope that consumers will be willing to step up to the plate and discuss the hot topic of printer ink cartridge prices.

A full schedule of topics has not been unveiled as yet although the corporation has stated that a number of angles will be explored. This could mean lively discussions aplenty on durability, cost per page and reliability of various ink cartridges.

Those interested in airing their views on the subject will need to be available for filming at the BBC's studios in Stratford, London, on February 7th. Anyone interested in being involved in the project have been asked to get in touch with Lyndsay Rowan at the BBC.

Ink Firm Canon Announces New Philippines Base

Heavyweight ink firm Canon has announced that it is to begin manufacturing printers out of a new Philippines base, located in the province of Batangas.

Canon, which also manufacturer ink cartridges, will use the new base for the production of laser printers as well as accessories that will make for the creation of a globally optimized production system.

According to the company, the printer market has performed well, with competitively priced models playing a central role. This increased demand has created a pressing need for Canon to secure necessary production capacity.

It is anticipated that the new plant will have access to a steady supply of human resources, including many which are capable of communicating in English as well as making the location well suited for manufacturing.

The plant is expected to undergo construction in April 2012 with operations getting underway in April the following year. It is estimated that the plant will create around 5,000 new jobs by 2014.

Ink Firm HP Helps Storybook Efficiency

Ink giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) has seen its products used by a New York-based online photo products boutique in order to create a new storybook product.

According to HP, Pinhole Press has used its HP Indigo in order to help meet demand for personalised keepsakes and has done ever since November.

The Storybook is the company's first photobook which allows customers to personalise each page with text and also choose their own layouts in order to make it fully personal to them.

Alon Bar-Shany, vice president and general manager, Indigo division, HP, said: "Pinhole Press has successfully combined innovative web-to-print layouts, binding expertise, high-quality HP Indigo printer ink digital printing, and premium Mohawk papers to create a new product that makes an emotional connection with consumers."

A notable Storybook customer was Martha Stewart, who created a series of Storybooks featuring pictures of her new granddaughter.

Ink Cartridge Savings Encouraged In Blog

A blog written for Consumer Search's website has shed light on what printer ink consumers need to look out for if they are to avoid paying over the odds for ink cartridges.

The blog suggests that it is not simply a question of dividing the cost of the cartridge by the number of pages that it can print. In fact, what consumers should be doing is thinking more about what they print.

The blog also suggests that it is worth keeping in mind that the ink cartridges which printers come with are not always filled to the brim and are not as good value as the standard brand new cartridges that you would buy normally.

The blog reads: "Regardless of the claims of number of pages per toner cartridge, by reducing the resolution of the printing and saving high resolution for publishing your final draft, you can increase the number of pages that the ink will yield."

According to the blog, the most reliable information about page-per-toner-cartridge is provided with those from Hewlett-Packard and Samsung.

Convenient and quick ink printing will be a top tech trend in 2012, according to PC Advisor which said that the latest printer models hitting shelves this year will all suit people's fast-paced lifestyles today.

It highlighted options from HP, Epson and Canon which come with 'touch and go' printing capacity and enable people to simply set a job up and then go about their other business while the printer completes the task.

As smartphones and tablets become ever more popular both among personal and business users, a lot of the technology emerging in the coming months is geared at making it easier to print from such gadgets.

Green printing can lead to substantial cost savings if implemented properly, it has been claimed. According to Ramnath Iyer, chief technology officer at CRISIL, such initiatives are a vital part of any green IT strategy.

"Green printing can bring value directly to the organisation and its adoption will only increase in coming years as it would be among the most talked about initiatives within green IT," he told Express Computer Online.

The key to implementing a good green printing strategy is to start simple, such as by introducing a network printer rather than having one for every team within an office.

That way it is easier to keep track of what is being printed. Ink cartridges recycling programmes are another great way to make printing a bit more environmentally friendly.

Putting up signs discouraging waste printing is another effective method which can result in workplaces saving paper and printer ink.

A study by Xerox recently highlighted that the average office worker prints 10,000 pages per year and wastes 1,410 pages.

HP Makes iPad Printing Easier

Ink company HP has announced a new range of printers which aim to make printing from an iPad simpler.

The Wireless Direct feature on the printers means that users can make the process of printing from a wireless device even easier as people don't even need to know the name of the local wireless network, reports Ars Technica.

Instead, Wireless Direct-enabled inkjet printers broadcast their own SSID allowing any iOS devices or Wi-Fi enabled computers to connect directly.

"Users can choose "HP-Print-4f-LaserJet" as their network, for instance, and as far as your iPhone is concerned, it is connected to a Wi-Fi network with an AirPrint-compatible printer," the news provider stated.

The development could prove to be a very shrewd move from HP with an increasing number of people owning smartphones and tablet devices rather than traditional laptops and PCs.

With a number of new devices including the Kindle Fire set to hit shelves this year, this trend is only likely to increase.

Australian Ink Firm Achieves Green Accreditation

A Darwin-based printer company has shown that it's not just recyclable ink cartridges which can help aid ink's impact on the environment after winning an award for its green credentials.

Coleman's Printing has become the most environmentally friendly printer in the Northern Territory, thanks to four years of tracking its environmental practices and, as such, has achieved a level two certification from Sustainable Green Print.

The company has, so far, recycled enough paper to save more than 4,000 trees in the past 18 months while it has also reduced the amount of landfill waste it creates by a massive 50 per cent.

Coleman's printing manager Tony Coleman, told NT News: "By recycling paper, we are also reducing the amount of oil used in the paper manufacturing process, and as a result of our initiatives we have saved enough fuel to travel around the world 14 times."

Coleman's is one of just 30 printers in Australia to receive the accreditation.

File Sharing Site Gets Onboard With 3D Printing

Peer to peer sharing site The Pirate Bay has jumped on board the newest ink craze of 3D printing by hosting a page dedicated to digital 3D mock-ups available for users to print physical objects.

According to the site, the technology will be the next big thing in copying and printing, allowing users to manufacture spare parts for their vehicles and, in a number of years, download and print out sneakers.

Currently, 3D printers for the home or small office are available from a number of companies although Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT, believes the venture may prove short-sighted for the site.

Mr King told TechNewsWorld: "I believe [The Pirate Bay] may have mistaken a package of powdered magic mushrooms for their usual chai latte. "At this point, I believe the investment cost in equipment and materials would require an industrial-scale operation."

3D printing is the process of creating three-dimensional objects from files using a materials printer, and special printer ink.

Consumers Using Their Ink Cartridges For Leisure

According to a poll from PC Advisor, the vast majority of consumers use their printers and ink cartridges for leisure purposes rather than in a professional capacity.

Within the survey, when respondents were asked who in their household uses the home printer the most, 60 per cent of respondents selected said themselves or their partner for leisure purposes.

Other options available for selection for the included 'Me or my partner - for work'; 'Kids - for leisure'; 'Kids - for homework/college'; and 'Other family/friends'. Another revelation to come out of the poll, sponsored by Kodak, was that in most households adults hold the keys to the printer.

A report on PC Advisor's website read: "Modern inkjet printers are becoming less expensive to run. That combined with remote printing features such as Google Cloud Print, or vendor specific services such as Kodak's Email Print Service, make printing snaps a casual, fun thing to do."

Just three percent of respondents chose 'Kids - for leisure' and a further three per cent selected 'Other family/friends'.

Newport City Council Cuts Down In Ink Cartridges Expenditure

Newport City Council (NCC) has announced that, thanks to a series of measures, it has managed to cut its ink cartridges and print-related costs by 25 per cent, equivalent to a hefty £90,000.

The printer ink savings comes as part of a wider IT infrastructure overhaul that the NCC has undergone with around 3,000 NCC staff now able to print and collect documents, scan to email or even network to any device across the council's 50 sites.

Mark Neilson, the NCC's head of customer and information services, is quoted by Sourcing Focus as saying: "NCC employees can now print from any supported location. A more flexible working environment is just what we need for our increasingly agile workforce.

"We have significantly reduced the administration costs of processing invoices and ordering ink consumables for our printers."

The NCC is also said to be launching a mobile print solution with Xerox with a view to a wider roll out.

Printer Ink Impact Set To Grow In Dubai During 2012

The printing and printer ink industry is expected to grow by around five per cent this year in Dubai according to the Printing and Publishing Group (PPG).

According to the group, the growth comes as a result of technological advancements and a huge contribution of finances by the UAE's printing industry.

The PPG and the Dubai International Print Awards have been determined to enhance the quality standards of the print industry in the area for some time.

Ahmad Bin Hassan Al Shaikh, chairman of the PPG, said: "Despite the unprecedented financial challenges faced by all sectors, the current market situation and data indicate a promising future for the printing industry.

"PPG and the Dubai International Print Awards offer a very unique platform which brings forward printers from the GCC, Levant, Asia, North and South Africa."

The group is preparing itself for the Dubai International Print Awards 2012 with will be held on February 8th at the Grand Hyatt, Dubai.

Printer Ink Plays A Leading Role In New Movie

Sony Pictures has told of how they used the latest trend in printers and printer ink to help create their upcoming film, The Pirates! Band of Misfits.

Speaking to Fox News, the company's key animator, Ian Whitlock, told how animators at the company used 3D printers to create the mouths for a number of characters within the film.

The news provider was told how the technology, which is the toast of the printing world currently, was used in order to make several different mouths for the 'Pirate Captain' as well as other characters.

Mr Whitlock said: "We built about 8,000 mouths. For the Pirate Captain model, we made 257 separate mouths. For someone like Charles Darwin, we probably had about 130 mouths."

Rich Brown, senior editor at cnet.com, told Fox: "The layers build up in liquid form. The material solidifies as it prints out each layer, and the end result is a 3D object in real life

The Pirates! Band of Misfits is set to be released in US cinemas on March 30th.

Technology Change Blamed For Ink Cartridges Surplus

A change in technology has been blamed for a $35,000 (£22,447) excess in stockpiled ink cartridges and toner cartridges, according to the Clarion Ledger.

Hinds County District Four Supervisor Phil Fisher was undergoing a fairly routine evaluation, consisting largely of desktop printers, fax machines and copiers when he found the huge surplus of printer ink and toners.

The discovery clearly alarmed Mr Fisher, given that the county's contract for master copying machines already provides such materials anyway.

A conversion in 2008 from an electronic-based system of scanning instead of copying and email rather than faxing has been blamed for the oversight.

Mr Fisher told the newspaper: "It had been bought and just squirreled away. "They've been sticking it in closets for years, and nobody's said anything. It's absurd for taxpayers to be paying for this."

The county is set to sell on the toner and ink cartridges surplus in an attempt to gain back some of the initial outlay in procuring the items.

Printer Ink history is set to take centre stage in the tri-state area next week with the president of the Printing Industries of America (PIA) set to visit and take part in a number of celebrations to mark International Printing Week.

Michael Makin will begin the week's frolics by addressing the local Ohio and Northern Kentucky PIA group at the Kenwood Country Club before then taking a tour of Newport-based printer Multi-Craft, which has existed for over 55 years.

Multi-Craft has been a member of PIA ever since the company was founded in 1955 and company president Deborah Simpson told Fox 19 that the visit of Mr Makin was an honour.

Ms Simpson said: "As a company with a rich history of its own, it is an honour to celebrate that of the entire print industry and host one of its great modern industry leaders."

PIA provides research, training, economic insight, cost-savings and advocacy to its member printer ink companies, who employ nearly a million people.

Tech review website PCWorld have posted an article about the age old question of whether to replace your ink cartridges when your printer says, or until they run dry.

PCWorld said "Probably. Chances are that doing so won't hurt the printer. But follow that advice at your own risk. Before you take this gamble, consider the possible price of having to replace your printer against the definite price of spending more money on printer ink in the long run."

If the printer refuses to work without a new or original cartridge, but you can see that there is still ink inside, you can try a 'printer reset'. You can find some interesting videos on Internet-inks YouTube channel, that may help you with your quest.

Share Printer Ink Query Response Issued By Computer Website

A response has been issued to a question asked in Computer Active's help section relating to whether two PCs can use one printer and share its ink or toner cartridges.

Responding to the question from a puzzled reader, an expert from the website suggested that a print-serve style gadget could be the answer to printers' prayers.

Such a device would allow any computer on the same network as the printer to recognise it, send jobs to it and potentially save money spent on printer ink because of the more efficient setup.

The response on the website reads: "A device such as the Network USB Hub is particularly convenient when the computers aren’t situated close together but if the computers aren’t networked, it is of no use. In that case, a simple USB switch will do the job."

Man And Ink Cartridges Combine To Form Perfect Machine

A true petrol-head has gone to great lengths, and great ink cartridges expense, to replace a Ford Mustang he had to sell in order to purchase an engagement ring.

Jonathan Brand managed to print off hundreds of sheets of paper on a wide format printer all with various parts of the car embossed upon them before painstakingly gluing them together to form what is an impressive replica of the famous car.

Mr Brand managed to complete the testing project using a 3D model created on his computer and a large-format printer. What is arguably more impressive is that the model wasn't created based on anything other than memory.

Technology website Human Invent noted: "Given the large amount of printed paper involved, and the cost of ink cartridges, we’re wondering whether Brand could have actually bought his original Ford Mustang back again?"

The finished piece of art is called One Piece at a Time, a nod to Johnny Cash's song about a Detroit worker who steals Cadillac parts and then assembles them piece by piece. Arguably an easier feat than what Mr Brand completed.

Epson Releases New Point Of Sale Printer

Ink heavyweight Epson has introduced a brand new point of sale (POS) printer at the National Retail Federation (NRF) Annual Convention and Expo.

Epson is already a leading supplier in the area of value-added point of sale solutions, and took the chance at the event to introduce its new compact TM-H2000 multifunction POS printer.

According to the company, the new model is designed for retailers who are on the lookout for high-speed printing, check processing as well as endorsement.

It also comes with a two year limited warranty and is ENERGY STAR-qualified so it is ideally suited for high-volume retailers looking to increase speeds and lower costs while maintaining quality.

Mike Helm, director of sales for Epson's business systems division, said: "Epson is committed to bringing retailers a wide variety of reliable printing solutions.

"The TM-H2000 has been designed to offer a cost-effective alternative to thermal, while delivering all the functionality that high-volume retailers need."

Epson's new model is capable of printing at up to 260mm per second and uses ink cartridges.

Ink Cartridges To Be Used Remotely With New Mobile Printer

Users of Zebra Technologies' latest printer could be set to use their ink cartridges in more of a mobile fashion, according to a statement from the company.

Zebra has announced the release of its QLn220 mobile printer at the latest National Retail Federation (NRF) Annual Convention and Expo and, with it, claimed that it can offer business users greater printing options and flexibility.

The printer is capable of printing two inch labels for such printing areas as shelf-edge, price and return labelling where a smaller, more compact format is preferred.

According to the company, the QLn220 adds to Zebra's breadth of products which, going forward, will allow retailers to streamline operations and improve customers' end experience.

Scott Lane, product manager at Zebra Technologies, said: "We will continue to provide the most innovative features necessary to meet the changing needs of our customer base.

"Later in 2012, the QLn will offer new wireless radio technology, 802.11n, increasing overall efficiency and productivity for our customers."

Zebra also chose the NRF event to demonstrate a wide array of other solutions for the retail industry using printer ink cartridges.

HP Announces New Range Of HP LaserJet Pro Printers

Ink and printer giant Hewlett Packard (HP) has announced a new range of energy efficient laser jet printers which are targeted at small offices and small to medium sized businesses (SMBs).

HP launched around a dozen odd printers in Gujarat, including the HP LaserJet Pro P1108, which is being billed as the world's most energy efficient printer thanks to its built-in printer driver.

According to the country manager, LaserJet Enterprise Solutions HP India, Mandeep Gupta, revealed that the company also has plans to enhance engagement with channel partners in tier II and tier III cities across India.

The Economic Times quotes Mr Gupta as saying: "Gujarat is an important market for us and we offer industry's largest portfolio of printing solutions with innovative products for the customers."

According to the newspaper, HP already empowers its channel partners through training and incentive-led initiatives which is set to grow with its planned expansion.

My dealings with Internet-Ink have been most satisfactory. First class products delivered on time and totally compatible with my Canon printer.

I was looking for online stores that sell pens to order myself a nice ballpoint one. Having browsed for about half an hour, I came across this gem.

The website is fairly easily navigable and the checkout process was quick and painless. The stated shipping time was 3-5 business days, so having ordered on a Thursday night and received the package on the following Saturday morning, needless to say I was impressed. Combined with probably the lowest price on the internet (for UK, anyway), I would say it's a no-brainer. If you're looking for a quality service at a low cost, this is the place.

I ordered 6 HP-equivalent cartridges one evening, got an email next afternoon saying items were picked and packed and mailed and received the order next morning in Aberdeen, Scotland. I have been using Internet Ink for several years now for ink cartridges for Canon printers and previously Epson printers. I had the odd problem with some Epson cartridges (compatible) although this may well have been due to the printer itself. Since switching to Canon I have had no problems running 2 identical models over a year now.

Delivery has always been particularly swift, a bonus considering it is a free service. All orders have been fulfilled correctly, and the website is easy to use and functions well. I usually buy compatibles and find them of good quality - many of my prints are high resolution A4 colour images so quality is important. Although originals have slightly better quality, the price of the compatibles gives them the edge especially when using a lot of ink on a monthly basis. So overall, five stars all round and way ahead of the odd competitor I have previously used.

I have tried them all and find Internet-ink by far the best for value and speed, they are just un-matchable. The quality of the product is second to none.

A really simple, straight-forward and easy-to-use web site makes ordering a dream and this is followed by an immediate dispatch meaning you get your product in no time. However, what puts this company far ahead of the rest of the field is the first-rate quality of its compatible cartridges. They really are, in my opinion, as good as or better than HP's own, which cost twice as much.

Technology review website PC Advisor have reviewed the new Canon i-SENSYS LBP-7010C laser printer, giving it 3.5/5 stars offering "surprisingly strong image quality for those prepared to wait, and pay."

"The Canon i-SENSYS LBP-7010C printer is very much a no-frills model to look at" states the review website. With no text display and only two buttons. However, the review goes on to say that the printer offers strong capabilities exactly where they’re needed. Print quality is impressive, and the price tag is low for a laser printer.

Epson has introduced a new wide format A3 photo printer called the Epson Stylus Photo 1500W. The 1500W can print many different media: glossy paper, plain paper, envelopes, iron-on transfers as well as CDs and DVDs. The device supports paper sizes from 4x6 inch photos to panoramic and A3+ sizes.

The Epson Stylus Photo 1500W uses Epson's Claria dye-based ink in six colors for vivid and long-lasting photos with a glossy finish. Coupled with a high resolution up to 5760 x 1440 dpi and a small droplet size of 1.5 pl results in high-quality prints with fine detail and smooth gradation of tones.

The 1500W has built-in Wi-Fi connection so you can quickly and easily print from laptops, desktops or mobile devices like iPhones and iPads through the Epson iPrint application.

Epson Announces New Artisan 1430 Wide-format Printer At CES

Epson have unveiled a new wide-format photo printer at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The Artisan 1430 can print on a variety of paper sizes up to 13x19 inches.

The Epson Artisan 1430 has built-in wireless 802.11n that allows multiple users to use the wide-format printer, including printing web pages, documents and photos on-the-go with the Epson Connect app from a smartphone, iPhone, iPad, or other mobile device.

The Artisan 1430 inkjet printer uses six ink colours. According to Epson, MicroPiezo print head technology ensures sharp, accurate ink placement, while optimising print speeds. The 1430 also lets you print images and text directly onto inkjet-printable CDs and DVDs.

Epson Donates 1 Million Peso For Typhoon Relief Efforts

Printer ink company Epson announced that they would donate 1 million Peso (approximately 23,800 US Dollars) to assist Filipino families affected by typhoon Sendong.

On December 16, the typhoon struck the southern coastal cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan, causing nearly one thousand people to lose their lives.

The printer company extends its condolences to the affected families, and Epson hopes its donation will aid the speedy recovery of the areas damaged by the disaster.

HP Criticised By Security Company

Internet and computer security firm Sophos has suggested that ink and printer firm Hewlett Packard (HP) could have made it easier for users to find a list of LaserJet printers affected by a recent flaw.

HP were forced to release a firmware update a number of weeks ago in order to fix the flaw which could have potentially exposed customers' confidential data to attackers.

However, Sophos says that the company could have moved quicker and made it easier for companies and users to find out which printers may have been affected.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, wrote in the company's blog: "It would have been nice if it had been a little easier to find, or linked to from HP's press release (announcing the fix)."

According to CRN's website, the list is readily available for users and were said to be unhappy at the accusation made by Sophos.

New Samsung Wireless Printers Offers News Opportunities For Ink Cartridge Users

Printer users may now not need their printer to be hooked up to anything other than a smartphone when they wish to see their documents or web pages in ink thanks to a development from Samsung Electronics.

According to a report in the Korea Herald, the wireless model of both printer series ML-2160 and SCX-3400 are now installed with Wi-Fi Direct so that smartphones and tablets may now be used to print as opposed to a computer with a physical link.

Samsung officials said that by downloading Samsung mobile printing applications from either Android or Apple's mobile application stores, people will be able to print files saved on such as devices.

A Samsung official is quoted by the newspaper as saying: "This is not the first time a printer which such function is being newly released, however, the connection process between a smart device and the printer has seen improvements, becoming more convenient than before."

The set-up time for the process will take just two minutes with printers available in white, sepia and blue.

Ink Giant HP Quells Fears Over Printer Security

Despite fears over printer safety, ink cartridge and printer manufacturer Hewlett Packard (HP) has announced it has built a new firmware update in order to shore up printer security.

Fears had been highlighted by researchers that remote hackers could potentially access HP printers and do damage which could lead to printer fires. This was dubbed as sensationalist by HP but now it appears it has moved to tighten things up.

The printing giant claims it is now communicating this update proactively to both its customers and partners but suggests that no customer has reported unauthorised access to any of its printing devices, let alone any fires.

HP also moved to reiterate its recommendation to follow best practices for securing devices by using tools such as firewall and also disabling remote firmware uploads on exposed printers.

The update is available for download on HP's website for any consumers concerned about security.

HP Pledges To Sort Out LaserJet Hacking Issue

Printer giant HP has released a fix to prevent its LaserJet printers being susceptible to hacking.

The company's new firmware update will prevent hackers from taking over a printing device, however, it won't help if the printer has already been compromised by cyber criminals.

Last month, researchers at Columbia University suggested that the devices could be hacked, compromising personal information.

HP issued a statement stressing that no customer had reported unauthorised access to their device, although it did admit there was a flaw.

"HP has identified a potential security vulnerability with some HP LaserJet printers ... if placed on a public internet without a firewall. In a private network, some printers may be vulnerable if a malicious effort is made to modify the firmware of the device by a trusted party on the network,'' the company's statement read.

HP recommends placing printers behind a firewall to protect them from remote hackers.

Dell Study Highlights Business Cost Savings

Printer manufacturer Dell has long claimed that its printer range can help companies save money, and now a study from Hansa Research suggests just that.

The study, which was reported by Money Life, highlighted that Dell printers boast a number of efficiencies which will save businesses both time and money and allow them to optimise the cost of their operation.

Commenting on the findings, Shishir Singh, director of product marketing, Dell India, said: "Our laser printers help SMBs maximise their investment and achieve exceptional long term value, with feature rich products at affordable purchase prices and low total cost of printing."

In terms of which Dell printers offer companies the best savings, the study found that the 1130 was the overall high scorer in terms of speed, paper maximum output capacity and maximum duty per cycle.

The Dell 1130N laser printer scored highest, amongst competing models of other companies in terms of paper maximum output capacity.

Manufacturer of printers and ink cartridges, Hewlett Packard (HP), has been shortlisted by industry analyst firm IDC has named HP a market leader.

A statement from HP revealed that IDC had completed its multivendor assessment study and highlighted that HP continues to maintain market leadership with high scores in strategic direction and offering capabilities.

The study looked favourably on HP's market leadership which had been gained as a result of a comprehensive strategy to deliver a unified experience across the office, onsite production and external printing arenas.

Bruce Dahlgren, senior vice president of the managed enterprise solutions, imaging and printing group at HP, said: "Looking ahead, market leadership will be defined by the ability to provide a consultative partnership focused on simplifying the most complex business processes and managing a larger print infrastructure."

The study praised HP's broad portfolio which has been enriched with industry solutions and features such as HP ePrint, the Open Extensibility Platform and FutureSmart firmware.

Investigator Brought In For Australian Toner Scandal

The Primary Industries Department in Australia has taken on a private investigator in order to get to the bottom of the toner cartridge scandal in the country.

Currently, in the scandal that has gripped Australia, 41 government agencies have become embroiled in the mire over the purchase of printer ink cartridges at heavily-inflated prices in exchange for gifts from companies.

A recent State Parliamentary Committee heard that Primary Industries staff have already identified 134 invoices from suspected suppliers over a four year period. It is believed that the investigator is a former police officer.

Opposition frontbencher Rob Lucas wasn't convinced, telling ABC News: "The body that should be conducting an investigation isn't a collection of private investigators.

"It should be the Auditor-General who should be conducting a comprehensive independent inquiry."

The news website reports that almost $1 million was paid to suspected suppliers for toner and ink products over the course of the scandal.

The blog suggests that the correct sort of printer paper is essential for the printer you use. So in terms of laser jet and ink jet printers it is important that the right paper is chosen if users want the highest quality printing jobs.

Torsten Neumann of German computer magazine Chip told the blog that there are issues to bear in mind with either type of printer so users should keep information in mind.

Mr Neumann told the blog: "Laser printers tend to have a problem with thicker paper graded at more than 160 grams per square metre. And paper with a plastic layer can melt in a laser printer and gum up the feed tray."

CNET Asia has been offered a sneak preview behind the scenes of a new recyclable ink cartridge scheme in Singapore known as Project Homecoming.

The news provider went behind the scenes of the new operation which involves the recycling of ink cartridges after collection at 13 national libraries from across the country.

It is hoped that not only will the scheme see scores of ink cartridges recycled and a significant amount of investment put back into the environment, it will also raise awareness among Singapore as to the benefits of recycling.

Within the visit, CNET reports that reporters saw the complete recycling process including procurement, the disassembly of used printer ink cartridges, the extradition of useful material and new products made from the recovered material.

The scheme is being driven largely by support from Brother, Canon, Dell and Epson however previously, CNET has raised doubts as to whether there are enough benefits to cartridge users.

Savings Urged To Complement Ink Cartridges Budgets

The Baldwin-Whitehall School District's directory of technology has given a speech to the school's board in which he recommended measures designed to save $84,000 a year in ink cartridges and other printing costs.

Tim Winner suggested that substantial savings could be made if the board were to enter a new, five-year printing/copying agreement with ComDoc. Among the improvements cited in the proposed contract is equipment better sized to meet volume needs.

On top of this, the addition of another black and white printer/copier the school as well as the ability for all new devices to scan images in high resolution and in colour would both help add to the savings available.

According to Baldwin-Whitehall Patch, Mr Winner believes that such measures will see a reduction of $7,000 in the monthly printing costs. With Mr Winner planning to re-address the board before January, he could have a good chance of convincing the board that the changes would work.

The board will decided whether to accept the changes at a later date.

Disappearance Of Ink Named Top Printing Gripe

A survey carried out by PC Advisor has found that ink running out too quickly is the main gripe of 68 per cent of printer users.

According to the website, its survey suggests that there is now a growing awareness among users that due care and attention needs to be given to selecting the adequate ink cartridges and printing plans.

The website recommends that users think long-term about what printing needs they have to ensure that they don't end up paying over the odds during the course of their printer's lifetime.

Results from the survey could encourage users to ensure that they check the manufacturers' page yield estimate prior to purchasing the item if they wish to make savings on printer ink in the long run.

The second most common problem that users highlighted with their printer was having issues with printing from their computer while ten per cent were unhappy with the print sharpness produced by their home inkjet printers.

Toner Cartridge Complaint Dealt With By Computer Active

Technology magazine Computer Active has responded to a query from a customers relating to how full toner cartridges are when they come with new printers.

The complaint came from Mike James and related to a printer he purchased which the seller stated would print around 2,000 pages. However, Mr James found that the toner had, in fact, ran out around halfway through that figure.

Mr James believes he will need to spend around £200 to fully restore his toner cartridge after the company told him it was written on the box that the printer only contained enough toner to enable setup.

However, the magazine suggested that the seller is correct in this and if it was written on the box then Mr James can have no complaints. Their advice was that customers should ensure they read the product information thoroughly.

Responding to the complaint, the magazine wrote: "This is standard practice. Don’t assume anything when buying a product. Sometimes it is best to ask a shop assistant for advice."

If customers are given the wrong information, they are able to get legal redress under the Consumer Protection Regulations 2008.

Ink Sales Boosted By Printer Popularity

Levels of ink cartridges use in India are likely to have risen dramatically over the third quarter of 2011 with the combined serial inkjet and page printer, copier and multifunction product market totalling 666,859 units.

The revelation came after research from Gartner, with researchers predicting that a growth in business activities within a variety of sectors is one of the main reasons behind the growth.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it seems many companies looking to increase their printing options have opted for the largest companies in the printing world. HP, Canon, Epson and Samsung dominated sales in the period in question.

Gartner's research analyst, Amrita Choudhury, said: "Business activities in the banking, financial services and insurance, manufacturing, IT and IT-enabled services sectors, and notably the government sector, lead to a growth of peripheral devices like printers and multi-functional devices."

HP dominated the segment with a 46.2 per cent market share while Canon and Epson enjoyed market shares of 28.6 per cent and 11.1 per cent, respectively.

New Update Announced To Test Ink Cartridges

The SpencerLab Digital Color Laboratory has announced a new update to its SpencerLab Printer Test Suite which will help users of ink cartridges gain a better insight into the quality of their printing.

Intended primarily for paper and ink suppliers, SpencerLab's print Quality analysis is an important aspect when it comes to printer quality benchmarking. The update has been unveiled as printing technologies continue to evolve, print speeds increase and the amount of choice expands.

Bearing in mind that durability has become a key concern among many manufacturers, the new update now offers a number of test files within its durability sphere.

Catherine Fiasconaro, director of the laboratory and vice president of operations, said: "As the industry continues to expand, so does the need to address arising concerns. This version 4.4 release provides our licensees with files for measurement and assessment of print durability."

In total, the SpencerLab Printer Test Suite consists of over three gigabytes of data as well as more than 90 test files.

Wireless Device To Allow Apple Users To See Documents In Ink

Connectivity solutions provider Lantronix has announced a wireless printing device which ensures that Apple iOS users will finally be able to see their mobile documents in printer ink.

The device, known as the xPrintServer, will allow users of iPads, iPhones and iPod touches to print wirelessly from their device to virtually any networked printer. Ever since the devices were released, many users have problems with connecting to compatible printing devices.

However, the new device, around the same size as an iPhone, will remedy that problem. It contains an iOS native print menu and doesn't require any additional applications, software downloads, or printer drivers.

Kurt Busch, president and chief executive officer for Lantronix, said: "The xPrintServer embodies our goal of leveraging Lantronix technology to serve the needs of today's growing markets.

"The proliferation of iPads and iPhones in the corporate world has yielded a potentially tremendous opportunity for providing an easy printing solution for enterprise-class printers."

The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the product is around £96.

Epson Releases ME Office 535 Small-in-one Printer

Printer and ink cartridge manufacturer Epson has announced the release of what it has dubbed the 'world's smallest all-in one printer'.

Epson's ME Office 535 aims to intertwine an environmentally friendly design with the low cost per page of the Epson ME Office range. That range has been specifically designed to offer higher performance and lower running costs, something this latest printer will be hoping to continue.

Cunningly nicknamed the 'small-in-one', Epson's new printer will use Epson DURABrite ultra pigment ink in order to help produce ultra-sharp text. This will keep it within the same paramaeters as printers which offer laser quality and grayscale graphic prints.

Mr Samba Moorthy, division head of sales and marketing for Epson India, told the Hindustan Times: "We are confident that no matter what our customers' business printing needs are, there is now a perfect Epson inkjet for them to reduce their running costs."

Compared to its predecessor, the Epson ME Office 535 uses 19 per cent fewer components, is 39 per cent smaller in size as well as being 24 per cent smaller in footprint.

CNET Compiles Printer Review To Help Add To Printer Ink Savings

IT writer Jacqueline Seng, from CNET Asia, has compiled her own review of the best all-in-one (AIO) printers on the market in the hope that readers can save money on efficiency when it comes to printing and ink cartridges use.

Specially within the review, Ms Seng highlighted the positive and negative points for three printers, the Epson ME Office 535, the Canon Pixma MG2170 and the HP Deskjet 3070A.

Within the review Ms Seng looked at five key areas for her analysis. These being long term costs, power consumption, ink cartridges, special features and warranty length.

Ms Seng wrote in her review: "These AIOs can print, scan and copy - while taking up less space on your table. If you live in a city, where space is generally limited, a more compact printer may be ideal for households and small office/home office."

The review concluded that the HP printer had features usually found on more expensive models. However users who opted for the Epson could find their printer more economical in the long run.

HP Release Counterfeit Toner Cartridge Prevention Tool

Printing giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced a new technology which allows users to identify counterfeit or fake toner and ink cartridges.

The technology is designed to help customers easily notice fake ink and toner and works by letting users scan the security label on the packages which would then enable them to verify their authenticity.

In a statement released by the company, HP claimed that the new tool features a quick response code on both HP ink and toner cartridge security labels which can be scanned quickly and easily to ensure quality.

Bernard Chiang , part of HP's Imaging and Printing Group, said: "The new HP Mobile Authentication tool features an innovative technology that will better protect customers from fraudulent printing supplies."

Counterfeit ink and toner cartridges are a massive problem to both the industry and to users because they detract from company profits and leave consumers with a sub-standard product.

Major Ink Cartridge User Wins Printing Award

Printing firm and mass-user of ink cartridges, Jacob North Companies, has been awarded the prestigious Great Printer Certification to keep it among the big players of the Midwest printing industry.

The award, bestowed on the company by Printing Industry Midwest (PIM), tests printers on two main areas in order for them to receive it. Those areas are, firstly, a safety and environmental audit which examines companies' environmental efficiency in its operation.

Second, companies are required to ensure that they have two 'above compliance' projects which show that the company doesn't just do the minimum required. The company's vice president, Chad Pinkman, stated that the award would do wonders for his company.

Paul Gutkowski, PIM's director of safety and environmental services, said: "Many printers attribute their successful Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) visits with no citations to their Great Printer Certification status. OSHA inspectors know that the Great Printer logo represents 'above and beyond compliance'."

Other printer ink companies in the region to receive the award include Advanced Web, Ambassador Press and Bang Printing.

Kodak Ink Cartridge Use Grows In The Commercial Department

Executives in the graphic communications department at Kodak have claimed that the growth of its commercial business, thanks to strong ink cartridge use and technology, has belied the gloom around the rest of the company.

Speaking at a recent media event, Greg Gresock, director of marketing for Digital Printers and Presses, said that Kodak's digital presses, printer heads and Stream inkjet technology are increasingly seeing more use.

Their use has specifically rocketed when it comes to traditional printing jobs such as high-speed direct mail runs, formerly done by offset printing. According to Print Week, Mr Gresock highlighted the Nexpress Photo Platform had made a big impact.

According to Print Week, Mr Gresock said: "The growth engine around Kodak is printing, especially digital print. When you look at the total number of pages that are being produced today, about 1 per cent of that production is being done digitally."

The company recently announced a new app for users to print remotely via the cloud.

Following the release of iOS devices, Kodak has finally released its Document Cloud Printing app for Android devices.

The package aims to allow cloud printing to all Kodak all-in-one printers using via Google Cloud Print. This will hopefully increase efficiency of printing for both individuals and businesses.

NASA Uses 3D Printing Technology

Along with recyclable ink cartridges, 3D printing is arguably one of the biggest things to happen to the print industry recently, and now NASA has begun to use the technology to create spare parts for space journeys.

NASA has recently selected a US firm's proposal to build a 3D printer for the space station and in theory the new technology could enable the manufacture of spare parts or tools on the fly, as it were.

Made in Space, came out of Singularity University which is a school for start-ups aimed at solving the world's biggest problems and the company's chief technology officer told of his belief in the project.

Jason Dunn, also co-founder of the company, said: "When a tool breaks, at the very worst the space-station crew calls Houston and says, 'Send us a CAD (computer-aided design) file of that tool,' and they'll be able to 3D-print it."

The development is the latest step forward for the printer technology which is growing all the time.

Companies Urged To Continue Toner Cartridge Savings In The New Year

A technology writer from Palm Beach Post has offered a number of handy hints and tips on how printer users can save money on their ink cartridges.

Writing in the newspaper, Bill Husted set out five tips he felt would save users money when it came to printing and buying printer cartridges. His first tip was for users to ignore the warning message relating low ink supplies, claiming that cartridges can still be half full when the message appears.

Winter Is The Time For Ink Savings

The winter months are a great time for businesses to reduce their carbon output, according to Hugh Jones, managing director of advisory services at Carbon Trust, which could include savings made through recyclable ink cartridges.

Speaking at the Property Week CRC webinar recently, Mr Jones said that companies should look to make as much savings as possible when it comes to energy output and that winter is as good a time as any.

Many firms find that winter is a tough time for all manner of bills and Mr Jones urged businesses to consider what savings they can make over the colder months.

Mr Jones said: "In terms of short-term actions, this really is an excellent opportunity to look at quick wins - particularly around behavioural change and aspects of energy efficiency. Those can be acted upon over the winter at a time when bills are higher."

Printing Giants Join To Encourage Responsible Ink Use

Five of the largest printing powerhouses in the world, Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson and Lexmark, have joined forces to create Singapore's first-ever toner and ink cartridges recycling initiative, Project Homecoming.

The initiative is aimed at encouraging both community awareness and also environmental responsibility among the Singapore people. This will be carried out by introducing convenient cartridge recycling as well as increased education.

With support from the National Environment Agency and the National Library Board, the initiative could have a big effect on the levels of energy savings made by printers in the country.

Andrew Koh, lead spokesperson for Project Homecoming, said: "We aim to bring greater convenience to the public who are keen on making a personal contribution to recycling efforts across the island, and are proud to be working together as a team to jointly fund and promote the culture of recycling in Singapore."

It is hoped that should the venture prove a success, then similar ink cartridges initiatives could be carried out around the world.

I have 4 printers and having bought a new one, which is new out, this compnay keeps up with the trend and supplies the replaceable ink for this printer. Brother Adds To Ink Based Energy Savings

Ink company Brother has released a series of printers aimed at adding to the efficiency savings already available with printer ink cartridges through a variety of green features.

Known as the Brother compact MFC series, features within the new arm of the Brother family include a multi-task option, the chance to save paper with automatic duplex printing and the availability for connections to multiple users with a wireless network.

This will not only streamline the printing process itself, it will also improve the levels of efficiency and waste when it comes to equipment costs and outlay.

Dry Ink Created By US Researchers

A revolutionary new 'dry ink' has been invented by researchers from the American Chemical Society (ACS) which is being hailed as a real step forward in improving the efficiency of ink cartridges.

According to the ACS, the new ink will produce high-quality, sharp colour images at a more economical rate. This will then lead to a cut in electricity by up to 30 per cent and reduces the amount of emissions produced.

Not only have the society released the printer ink but they have also released a video which aims to show the process they underwent.

ACS president Nancy B. Jackson, Ph.D, said: "The Prized Science videos strive to give people with no special scientific knowledge the chance to discover the chemistry behind the American Chemical Society's national awards and see how it improves and transforms our daily lives."

The new type of dry ink has the appearance of a powder but is said to be just as professional when it comes to printing as traditional inks.

Brother Welcomes New Ink Experts To The Family

Heavyweight printing firm Brother has announced a number of additions to its team in order to help its progression as a top manufacturer of printers and ink cartridges.

As part of a reshuffle, the firm has taken on Cathy Ellis and Rick Wallis who between them have over 42 years within the printing industry in a variety of roles and companies.

It is hoped that the reshuffle will allow Brother to capitalise on future products and continue at the top of the print game.

Phil Jones, sales and marketing director for Brother UK, said: "The expansion of our sales team and the creation of the new job roles means that we can continue to exploit profitable areas of the print market by targeting key customer groups taken from our industry insight and expertise."

Between them, the two new recruits have previously worked at Lexmark and Dell.

Ink Heavyweights HP Dampen Fire Fears

Hewlett Packard (HP), the well-renowned printer and ink cartridge manufacturer, has been forced to dampen fears that its printers could be set on fire remotely by hackers.

Researchers from Columbia University in New York have claimed that they had discovered a flaw in one of the company's older printers which caused it to overheat. However HP has moved quickly to deny the notion.

The company has stated that there is no chance that the printers could essentially be blown up by hackers, causing a danger to users of the printers.

In a statement, the company said: "There has been sensational and inaccurate reporting regarding a potential security vulnerability with some HP LaserJet printers.

"No customer has reported unauthorised access. Speculation regarding potential for devices to catch fire due to a firmware change is false."

It had been suggested that HP printers made before 2009 may have been targeted as they didn't verify firmware updates.

Brother Launches Printers And New Augmented Reality Service

Printer and ink cartridge manufacturer Brother has announced a series of printers which will be released into the market during a launch at The Armani Ballroom in Dubai.

Yuji Furukawa, representative director and senior managing executive officer at Brother, was the guest of honour at the evening's event and was also flanked by other senior members of the company.

The event saw the launch of a variety of A3 and A4 printers including the MFC -J6510DW (A3), MFC-J6910DW (A3), MFC–J430W (A4), MFC–J625DW (A4) and the MFC–J825DW (A4).

As well as launching these products, Brother also used the event to announce Brother AR, the company's upcoming augmented reality (AR) service.

Mr Furukawa said: "As a famous saying goes, 'You don't just sell a machine, but a concept.' Brother, with its rich experience and pioneering history, could not have achieved all this success without our partners and the millions of Brother end-users, who are not only from this region but from across the world."

The new AR application is specially designed so customers can experience printers at a more interactive level.

Canon Aims To Help University Increase Efficiency

An assessment carried out by printer and ink cartridges developer Canon has found that setting printers to duplex mode can make massive inroads into helping the environment.

An assessment carried out by Canon on printers at Arizona State University (ASU) during 2011 found that the environmental savings from duplex printing saved over 725 trees. On top of this it also managed to save 2.34 million litres of water and lowered carbon emissions by more than 74 metric tons.

ASU currently has a partnership with Canon which aims to help the university achieve a Sustainable Digital University standard.

Ray Jensen, associate vice president of University Business Services at ASU, said: "We are grateful to have the support of the Canon team to help move ASU closer to our 2025 carbon-neutrality goal. In one year, we were able to take 584 printers offline across ASU, and increase the number of devices supporting duplex printing."

To help ASU achieve this, the Canon team regularly conducts site evaluations and makes efficient equipment recommendations.

Customer-printing innovator EFI has announced a deal with mobile app creators Breezy which could lead to an increased number of app users printing remotely via EFI's PrintMe technology.

PrintMe offers users the chance to print remotely when away from the home or office and adds to the efficiency and cost-savings that many firms already achieve by using recyclable ink cartridges.

Now users of BlackBerry and iPhone smartphones as well as iPads will be able to print and fax documents from their devices to mobile printers across the U.S.

Jared Hansen, Breezy's chief executive, said: "We're very pleased to be partnering with EFI, a well known leader in the printing industry.

"As the professional world continues to move towards mobile devices, this relationship enhances our suite of mobile printing applications by improving the size and reach of the Breezy Partner Network."

Indian Print Forum Sees Reaffirmed Commitment To The Printing Industry

The All India Print-tech Professionals Forum (AIPPF) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting manufacturers of printers and print products such as ink cartridges at a recent seminar in Kolkata.

In the seminar, held jointly with Dainippon Ink and Chemicals, the AIPPF stated that it was to extend advisory services, technical assistance and staff development within company workforces across the country.

This is planned to take place by way of awareness programmes on modern technology for technicians within many of the nation's printing establishments.

AIPPF president Sukamal Adhikari is quoted by the Times of India as saying: "The Indian printing industry has grown over the years and has contributed substantially to the economy. With the growth rate at 12.5 per cent per annum, it makes a significant contribution to trade, commerce and industry."

The AIPPF is currently making efforts to collaborate with the Indian government's training programmes through the public private partnership model.

HP Announces Extra-efficient LaserJet Printers

Printing giant HP has announced a range of monochrome and colour LaserJet single function and all-in-one printers which will aim to add to the efficiency already achievable by using recyclable ink cartridges.

The new printers are fitted with HP Smart Web Printing technology which will see a reduction in paper wastage by more accurate scaling between web and print documents. As well as this technology, the new printers also have a higher print speed than previous printers for greater efficiency.

The printers are aimed at both small office home office (SOHO) environments as well as offices of small to medium sized businesses (SMBs).

Nitin Hiranandani, director of HP LaserJet Enterprise Solutions, told India Info Online: “Our new range of monochrome and colour LaserJet printers embodies HP’s commitment to innovation and a greener environment. These are affordable, space and cost-saving devices that are specifically designed for SOHOs and SMB customers.

The new printers were announced by Hewlett Packard India today.

Government Agencies Found To Be Overpaying For Toner Cartridges

Government departments and agencies in Australia have been discovered to be paying way over the odds for toner cartridges over the past three years, ABC News reports.

Australia’s Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC) found that several local government agencies have contributed to a total of $415,000 in overpay for the past three years. It is believed that public officers were given gifts from a company who sold the cartridges.

It is believed that agents selling the toner would use aggressive practices and offer gifts to encourage agencies to buy more than what was needed.

While the report did not name specific companies, government agencies or individuals as the practice was so widespread but a report has been carried out to investigate.

Seven recommendations have been provided by the CCC which will aim to advise government agencies on how to tighten up their gift and procurement policies so that nothing like this happens in future.

Printer Hardware Centralisation Can Boost Efficiency

The benefits that organisations can realise by centralising their printer hardware and toner cartridges is being explored as part of a new scheme at Colorado State University.

At present, students print more than 60,000 documents per day, which is a lot of ink cartridges, but a new system that is being considered could see an opt-in centralised system being run on campus, the Rocky Mountain Collegian.

Each college would no longer function independently and people would no longer need to visit computer labs to print, instead using specialised printer ink kiosks around campus.

A per-page fee has also been proposed in order to reduce the number of excessive print jobs being performed, which is hoped to reduce both printer ink and paper costs.

David Thilmany, representative for the College of Liberal Arts on the College Information Technology Administrators Council, which is pursuing the change, has reassured students that the changes will be gradual.

He said: "On the technical end of things, it’s definitely possible to work towards that end, if that’s what students want to do."

Tim Tierney, councillor and chair of the Beacon Hill-Cyrville information technology subcommittee, recently told the Ottawa Citizen that new software has been keeping track of the council's print efficiency and is designed to drive down the authority's impact on the environment.

Cloud Software Could Make Printer Use Easier

A new piece of cloud software could make it easier for printer ink users to connect their hardware with a computer network, an expert has suggested.

MoneyWatch's Dave Johnson, writing for CBS, has claimed that printers have remained one of those technologies that have remained complicated and difficult for many people to use.

He highlighted problems dealing with cables, toner and remembering to refill ink cartridges as minor compared to the major barrier he identifies – networking.

Mr Johnson describes setting up printers as one of the last "black magics" of the IT industry but that the growth of software such as Google's Clod Print means that it has become far easier to hook up a number of different machines to the printer.

He said: "They can print using the Print button on the Cloud Print site -- just click it and upload the document or file they want to print."

CTV News recently suggested that other aspects that could inform buyers decisions on which printers to buy could be the efficiency of ink cartridges, as these are a major factor in running costs and ease of use.

Ink Cartridges Sales Boosted In The UK

The amount of ink cartridges recycling in the UK will have enjoyed a major boost over the past quarter thanks to increased printer sales.

Statistics from IT research firm Context have shown that sales of printers in the UK grew six per cent in the third quarter of 2011 in comparison to the same period in the year before.

The rise is in contrast to the decline in printer sales witnessed across other parts of Europe. HP remained top of the tree, being the leading vendor in the quarter and accounted for 44.4 per cent of total inkjet and laser printers sold across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Jeremy Davies, co-founder and chief executive at Context, said: "In western Europe, the effects of the economic slowdown were felt by those countries most affected, especially Greece, where printer sales fell 35.1 per cent in Q3 2011 compared with last year, with sales down 6.1 per cent in Spain."

Canon was the second-biggest supplier, with a 21.4 per cent market share of unit sales, up from 19.1 per cent a year ago.

Two Samsung Printers Add To Environmental Benefits Of Ink Cartridge Recycling

Offices and individuals looking to add to environmental savings made when recycling ink cartridges should consider investing in two Samsung printers after they performed well in environmental tests.

Samsung's ML-2955DW and SCX-4729FW printer models were awarded 4.5 environmental ratings for performance by the independent Buyers Laboratory Inc (BLI).

Samsung Announces Printer Efficiency Measures To Complement Potential Ink Savings

Printer company Samsung has announced two new printer models will be targeted at small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in order to help add to savings made possible by recycling ink cartridges.

The SCX-4729FD multi-functional mono laser printer and the ML-2955ND mono laser printer will both be targeted at SMEs with the aim of increasing efficiency and cutting costs.

This will be achieved via increased printing speed, faster CPUs and higher memory allowances while SME owners will still be able to use cheaper, recycled cartridges.

New Ink Allows For Non-porous Printing

A new form of ink that enables printing to take place on non-porous surfaces has been incorporated into new Wolke thermal inkjet printers.

The solvent-based ink is reported to offer extensive quality even when it comes to printing small characters and will be made available exclusively through Sunala for the UK's pharmaceutical market.

Sunala is able to offer a special traversing unit which, coupled with the ink's integration with Wolke’s top selling m600 advanced thermal inkjet printer, means that the ink can be put to truly effective use.

The m600 printer features a HP ink cartridge system which contains both the ink and the print head meaning that the key elements of the printing system are replaced at the same time.

Epson Releases Colorio E820 Portable Printer

The printer ink industry is likely to be changed by digitisation, it has been suggested.

Dr Mark Bohan, vice-president of technology and research at the Printing Industries of America, said the way in which information is communicated is changing.

"Certain products are going to move from printing to other areas and that's fine. It may well be the most effective way of doing it and we have no problem with what's going on," he stated.

Dr Bohan suggested that new printing opportunities will be created through the merging of content, including colour and data.

"There are many studies that have shown that a combination of the multimedia and the print provides a much better return on your investment," he said.

According to the British Printing Industries Federation, the UK ink cartridges industry enjoyed a more profitable quarter between July and September 2011.

Reviewing the manufacturer's latest release, Cartridge News explained that customers can connect to the printer via a USB device, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Google Cloud Print, Kodak E-mail Print, Pic Flick and PictBridge.

Software Pilot Aims To Reduce Paper And Ink Consumption

New technology developments in the printer ink sector are helping end users to reduce their impact on the environment, it has been claimed.

Councillor Tim Tierney, chair of the Beacon Hill-Cyrville council's information technology subcommittee, explained that new software is helping to increase print efficiency.

It can help public bodies track city reports, documentation presented at meetings and voting records, he told the Ottawa Citizen.

This means the amount of paper being printed by local authorities can be reduced, and they will spend less on ink cartridges as a result.

"What we're really trying to do is move city council into the next century. The days of pad and paper are going to hopefully be behind us," Mr Tierney stated.

He explained that the technology subcommittee would be running a pilot scheme to test the application of the new software.

Nearly half of people who work from home prefer inkjet printers, according to a new poll.

PC Advisor asked its readers which type of printing device they would prefer to use in their home office – with 49 per cent of respondents going for the inkjet ink. The second most popular printer was the laser printer, with 31 per cent of the votes.

Some 14 per cent of respondents said they have both inkjet and laser printers in their home workspace. Just two per cent of respondents said they do not have a printer at home for work use – highlighting how important printers are to working life.

PC Advisor said the fact inkjet printers emerged as the most popular home printing device wasn't all that surprising. The magazine highlighted how versatile inkjets are – allowing households and small firms to print a large variety of content.

While there is a perception that inkjets carry high ink cartridges costs, PC Advisor said this isn't the case with top-quality equipment. "Good-quality modern inkjets enjoy lower ink costs and better efficiencies," it said.

"Some even have discrete toner cartridges - so if one runs out you don't have to replace them all."

Many Brits will be heading online to shop for printer ink and toner cartridges this year, new research suggests.

According to comparison website Kelkoo, more than 25 per cent of seasonal shopping will take place online this Christmas, Internet Retailing reported.

Its study found that Britons will spend more on gifts than those in other European countries, spending an average of £437 per household.

Overall, UK shoppers will spend more than £13 billion online in total, as they head online to search for Xmas pressies, gadgets and ink cartridges.

Chris Simpson, chief marketing officer at Kelkoo, was quoted as saying: “In spite of public spending cuts across the UK and the rest of Europe, the research suggests that overall household budgets will grow by one per cent this Christmas in the UK compared to last year and online spending will continue to thrive, playing a key role in propping up overall retail growth."

According to Nathan Emberton from ComputerHope.com, consumers can expect to see dozens of new printers and ink cartridges coming onto the market over the coming years, such as 3D printers.

Ink cartridges and printer manufacturer HP has positioned top of November's Guide to Greener Electronics, maintained by Greenpeace. The Greenpeace guide now takes into account energy use, conflict minerals, and green products.

Although HP ranks low on e-waste recycling, its sustainability efforts have helped it rise to the top of the 'green' electronic company charts.

Fax Still Popular Among UK Small Firms

New research shows the fax machine is still popular among the UK's small business community, just like other traditional office staples such as printers and ink and toner cartridges.

Research by chip maker Intel found that the fax machine – which came to prominence in the early 1980s – is used on a daily basis by 40.5 per cent of IT users.

The study suggests while there are a plethora of technologies that allow firms to send documents quickly and electronically, many of them aren't being put in use by small firms.

Despite the perceived popularity of tablets, Intel's survey found they are currently used for work purposes by just 1.4 per cent of IT users. A laptop is used by 36.4 per cent and a smartphone by 16.2 per cent of IT users.

If it's easy to send a fax or print a document using ink cartridges, perhaps it's a case of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' for the UK's small businesses.

But Intel said small companies were put off adopting new technologies such as tablets and cloud computing because of a lack of financial and human resources.

Graham Palmer, managing director of Intel UK, said: "It's clear that as SMEs tighten their purse strings, buying new technologies falls to the bottom of the list of priorities.

"Yet, it's important that IT decision makers weigh the advantages, such as the increased efficiency and flexibility delivered by mobile devices, against the cost."

Ink Cartridges Recycling Set To Rise In Oz

The number of printer ink cartridges recycled in Australia is set to rise next year following the implementation of a new green scheme.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the National Television and Computer Product Stewardship Scheme will signal the end of electronic and related products – such as toner cartridges – being sent to landfill.

In 2007 and 2008, around 17 million televisions and computers in Australia reached the end of their useful life, with no formal scheme in place for their recycling.

Under the scheme, free collection points will be set up across the country, making it easy for the public to take along their printer and ink cartridges for recycling.

Leading printer ink manufacturers are supporting the initiative, too.

One such scheme that has already been running for eight years is C4PA, which has already recycled more than 16 million printer ink cartridges.

Lexmark International's marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand, Stephen Bell, told the newspaper: ''The C4PA scheme has been fantastic for our industry.

''It's given us a consistent brand to engage the market with and we've built up a really broad collection network, which is a key component of its success.''

Printers And Ink Should See Kodak Return To Growth

Kodak's move into the printer and ink cartridges industry could help the manufacturer return to former glories, it has been suggested.

Concerns have been raised over the financial health of the 131-year-old firm, which continued to lose money during the third quarter of the year.

Falling digital camera and film sales saw the firm lose $222 million (£138.7 million) between July and September 2011, causing cash reserves to fall to $862 million.

However, as Ben Dobbin, writing for the Associated Press, explained, there is positivity in the Kodak camp based upon the firm's growing ink and printing arm.

"Since 2005, Kodak has poured hundreds of millions into new lines of inkjet printers that are finally on the verge of turning a profit," he noted.

"Home photo printers, high-speed commercial inkjet presses, workflow software and packaging are viewed as Kodak's new core."

Mr Dobbin explained that revenues from these businesses rose by a combined 13 per cent in the quarter, fuelled by 44 per cent growth in home printers and ink.

"The four businesses remain a bright spot in the company's long and painful drive to recast itself into a reliably profitable player in the turbulent digital-imaging arena," he added.

Printer ink manufacturer HP has introduced two new printers capable of handling a broader range of indoor and outdoor signage applications.

According to the firm, the new units – the HP Designjet L28500 and HP Designjet L26500 – offer better durability than eco-solvent inks.

HP's 104-inch-wide Designjet L28500 Printer delivers speeds up to 70 per cent faster than the HP Designjet L25500.

While the 61-inch HP Designjet L26500 is ideal for customers entering the growing soft-signage market, the manufacturer claimed.

Both systems feature new HP 792 Latex Designjet Inks, which produce rich blacks and glossy results on banners and self-adhesive vinyl.

They offer double-sided printing capabilities with less user intervention and more accurate, automated registration, ink cartridge users will be interested to learn.

HP said its Latex Inks provide a "consistent, reliable performance" across a variety of substrates.

Printing Industry Expands During Q3

The UK printing industry enjoyed a more profitable quarter between July and September 2011, boosted by increased service demand.

According to the British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF), greater sales volumes delivered increased profits for the sector.

However, margins were squeezed by rising costs, with higher paper and ink cartridges prices continuing to apply pressure on the industry.

BPIF public affairs advisor Andy Brown said profit improvements were volume-driven during the third quarter of the year.

"But because of the erosions in margin, should those volumes drop the industry will be in a more difficult position than it has been for a long time," he stated.

BPIF research and information manager Kyle Jardine said the third quarter was the fifth out of the past six quarters in which growth has been registered.

"Prospects appear brighter still between now and Christmas, with two-fifths of our survey respondents predicting a pick-up in trade in the final three months of the year, easily offsetting those expecting further slowing," he stated.

Mr Jardine said the fourth quarter is normally a busier period for the printing industry, which may see demand for ink and printer cartridges increase.

Firms Can Balance Ink Cartridges And The Environment

When businesses invest in printers and ink cartridges, the environment may not be their foremost concern.

But according to Dr Mark Bohan, vice-president of technology and research at the Printing Industries of America, buyers will soon be able to balance their printing needs with their carbon footprint.

This is because manufacturers are working on technology which looks to reduce chemistry and power consumption, he explained.

"Last year, we awarded an InterTech [technology award] for a plate processor that had been developed to minimise the impact of the chemistry that is used during printing," Dr Bohan said.

"There are lots of other technologies [such as] the H-UV from Komori this year - a technology that uses specific printer inks and curing technology and significantly reduces power consumption."

User can get a very similar effect to ultraviolet using printing that can be retrofitted, he said.

The PDF/VT could have have a big impact on the ink cartridges and digital print industry.

Businesses should think carefully about their choice of printer and ink cartridges, as they bid to keep costs to a minimum, it has been suggested.

Writing for eva-news.com, Herbert Mendez said customers should consider the cost of ink cartridges before they select a particular model, as this is where the costs can quickly mount.

He explained that many customers look at the cost in terms of volume per ink, but this is not necessarily the best measure.

"The facts could be deceptive for the reason it does not genuinely let you know how few pages ink cartridges can create," Mr Mendez stated.

He noted that certain printers and cartridges are more efficient with ink than others, and this is what buyers should be looking at if they are on a tight budget.

Samsung Dell Firmware Update Warning On Compatible Toner Cartridges

It is understood by static control that Samsung have released a firmware update for printers to prevent the use of compatible toner cartridges in some of their printers and some of the Dell complient versions.

Customers are advised to test their compatible toners and should not accept the update on the printer in order to use the compatible toner cartridges.

1. Uninstall the printer drivers/software for the machine in question.
2. Re-install the printer driver/software with disconnected internet connection and ignore the prompt when the upgrade is offered again.

If this action doesn't work or you are having problems with the compatible Samsung or Dell toners then please don't hesitiate to contact our customer service department. Carrying out research before buying a printer online is advisable, according to ComputerHope.com.

The website stated that at the moment two types of printing options are popular for printer ink users, including Wi-Fi and cloud-based technology.

According to the company, there are numerous systems available for people to use in order to produce documents from remote devices, such as tablets, smart phones and digital cameras.

However, ComputerHope.com's Nathan Emberton said that people should read some online reviews before purchasing a new ink cartridges product.

HP Receives Favourable ITC Review Over Ink Cartridges Infringements

HP has announced that it has obtained a favourable review by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) regarding the sale of patent-infringing ink cartridges.

The printer ink firm saw the ITC uphold its Initial Determination ruling from June 2011, which also found additional infringements.

According to HP, the ITC agreed that Asia Pacific Microsystems is a contributory infringer of HP ink cartridge patents.

Furthermore, MicroJet Technology and PTC Holdings have also been found to be direct infringers of the printer ink firm with the manufacturing and selling of fake products.

"HP is pleased with the outcome on these matters and the ITC’s enforcement of intellectual property rights," said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president in imaging and printing group at HP.

Earlier this year, HP announced that Ghanaian law enforcement officials confiscated nearly 1,100 illegal items following a highly coordinated raid.

Following the strike the authorities retrieved a total of 125 finished fake HP ink cartridges and 670 ready-for-sale laser print cartridges.

The Kodak Hero 9.1 inkjet is the ink cartridges company's new top of the range, home printer. It features double-sided printing, a large colour touchscreen, a separate photo paper tray and wireless networking support.

Tech news website CNet state that the Kodak Hero 9.1 "has a premium feel aesthetic, that is further enhanced by this model's 4.3-inch touchscreen." Setting up the printer is easy with this screen, and includes a full QWERTY keyboard.

The Kodak Hero 9.1 is Google Cloud Printing ready, so you won't even have to connect it to a PC to print. You can also print straight from USB and memory cards.

Being an All-in-one, the Kodak Hero 9.1 also features scanning and copying functionality. This is done by feeding the document into the printer, and can copy both sides of the document automatically.

Although full of features, the Kodak Hero 9.1 "was certainly not the fastest model around" according to CNet. "It took one minute and 58 seconds to complete our ten-page black-and-white text documen".

The Kodak Hero 9.1 uses just two cartridges: the Kodak 10B Black ink cartridge and combined Kodak 10C Colour ink cartridge. The Kodak printer ink works out very cheap to run over the longer term, with monochrome pages at 1.5p, and colour pages at around 3p each. And will be even less if you buy compatibles!

The Kodak unified workflow solutions have enabled Reprograph to carve out a niche with its document production processes.

The Croatian-based company invested in Kodak's PRINERGY CONNECT Workflow software and the company's INSITE Storefront System.

According to Reprograph, since the introduction of the technology it has been able to reduce production costs, gain efficiencies, avoid costly reprints and eliminate errors both in terms of finance and time.

"The graphic arts industry is continuously changing and redirecting its focus from quantity to value-added rules," said Tomislav Ilic, owner of Reprograph.

"Kodak PRINERGY CONNECT Workflow had a very big, immediate impact on our business," he added.

Recently, Canadian-based commercial printer Emerson Clarke invested in the latest Kodak ink cartridges technology to deliver a competitive advantage to its company.

The firm invested in a NEXPRESS SX3300 Press to provide high-quality, fast and accurate documents for its customers, which it could not previously do without the new printer ink technology.

Konica Minolta Wins Bedford Council's Print Contract

Bedford Borough Council has selected Konica Minolta to provide it with a high-quality in-house print management system.

The ink cartridges company is expected to help the local authority deal with its high-volume service that produces over 500,000 colour prints every month.

Ink cartridges company HP has announced a new mobile ink cartridges application to make it easier for design professionals to produce large-format printing while on the move.

The company claims that its HP ePrint & Share software is a tool that will allow those in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry to produce documents on the cloud efficiently.

According to HP, the technology has been designed for iOS-based devices including iPhones, iPads or iPod touches.

"AEC design professionals are highly mobile, constantly moving between the office, the job site and offices of partners and clients, said Santiago Morera, vice president, HP Designjet Large-Format Solutions.

Ink company Samsung has released its newest addition to its mono-laser printer ink range.

The company claims the Samsung ML-2955DW laser printer will provide an efficient and versatile solution for small business users.

On top of this, the latest product can print up to 28 pages per minute and boasts strong eco-credentials.

Ink cartridges compabt Kodak has announced that it has made enhancements to its Picture Kiosk software.

The new technology will allow printer ink consumers to use images from their own, and friends', shared photo albums from Facebook, Google Picasa and Kodak Gallery to create innovative and interesting personalised documents.

According to Kodak, the latest software will allow people to enrich the stories their pictures tell by creating printer ink projects for personal greetings, calendars, photo cards and prints.

Nick Zongrone, general manager in retail systems solution and permanent in print at Kodak, said: "Providing easy access to the broad base of images stored on social networks through the Kodak Picture Kiosk allows consumers to do more than just share images; it lets them create something memorable and permanent in print."

US Department Of VA To Benefit From Xerox Technology

A Xerox company, ACS, will help the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) make it easier to convert its paper-based processing system into an electronic one.

The ink cartridges firm's subsidiary claims it will make it easier and faster for veterans to file claims and receive benefits.

It is expected that by using Xerox technology, under a $54 million (£34 million) three-year contract, the new system will significantly reduce backlogs and process files more efficiently.

Joseph Doherty, executive vice president and chief operating officer in ACS government solutions, said: "The VA has the honourable mission of providing important benefits to veterans. Our role is to provide services and technology that simplify and speed up access to these benefits.

"When government agencies re-engineer their processes, it has an immediate, positive impact on the people they serve.

Recently, the US Department of Defense awarded Xerox a five-year contract to reduce the costs and improve the printer ink technology in its offices.

Printer ink firm Lexmark has launched a new service to help those working in the healthcare sector.

The firm's Patient Admissions and Registration Solution has been designed to simplify processes in a paper-intensive area.

According to Lexmark, the latest product lets healthcare providers electronically capture, route and organise patient documents accurately and securely.

Ink Cartridges Inventor Chester Carlson Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

Chester Carlson, the inventor of xerography, has been inducted into the Paper Industry International Hall of Fame.

The man who revolutionised the ink cartridge industry in the 20th century for his process of plain paper copying was selected to join the exclusive club on October 6th. Mr Carlson patented the innovative copying concept in 1937 before forming a licensing agreement in 1947 with the Haloid Corporation, which later became Xerox.

It was in 1959 when the world's first plain paper copier, the Xerox 914, was launched onto the market. Fortune magazine stated that the 914 copier was "the most successful product ever marketed in America".

Meanwhile, Xerox recently released two new Digital Colour Presses designed to increase the monthly document productivity in various organisations. HP To Showcase Printer Ink Solutions At UK Roadshow

Printer ink firm HP will showcase a host of its new technology innovations at a series of roadshows around the UK.

The company has announced that it will be demonstrating the print capabilities of its HP DesignJet L25500 printer and its Scitex LX820 and LX850 products at different venues across Britain.

According to HP, its branded truck will make eight stops between November 15th and December 2nd to showcase its technology.

HP will kick-off the roadshow at Sandown Park, in Esher, Surrey and will then head to the West Midlands, Edinburgh, Manchester, London, Belfast, Dublin and will finish off at Curvaheen Park Stadium in Cork.

Epson Ink Cartridge Scam Nets Pair 1 Million USD

During a two-year period, Christian Dunca and Vladut Larion bought Epson ink cartridges from Best Buy and Target stores in Georgiam USA. When they got home, they would remove the name-brand cartridges and re-sell them on eBay.

Then, the suspects would “Refill the box with an empty cartridge or an off-brand cartridge, something cheaper, Gwinnett Police Department spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said. The pair had “all kinds of box cutters, shrink wrap guns, glues for repackaging and all these boxes to make it look professional."

The suspects allegedly returned the Epson printer ink cartridge boxes to stores in Florida and New York for full cash refunds. Police estimate the scheme netted the men about $1 million, “and the loss to these retail outlets is about a half a million, Smith said.

Xerox Wins Printer Ink Service Contract With US Department Of Defense

Domino To Launch Its new Inkjet System At LabelExpo Europe

Ink cartridges expert Domino has announced that it will be premiering its innovative new inkjet printer system at LabelExpo Europe this week.

Domino's K600i single colour piezo inkjet system operates with a single inkjet module covering the whole web.

The product is, according to Domino, a solution which operates at double the speed of its nearest competitors, at 50 to 75 metres per minute.

One of the key features of the K600i is the removal of the need for daily maintenance and cleaning whilst also reducing the risk of ink nozzle blockages by automatically capping the head whenever it is not in use.

Domino announced earlier in the year that the K600i will also be able to be integrated into existing presses.

Philip Easton, director of Domino’s Digital Printing Solutions, said that the product was designed to address the requests it received from clients, and he feels it is ready to do so.

"Demand has been increasing for labelling applications including variable data – from simple stock control, promotional games, anti-counterfeit data through to complete printing of labels for brand owners," he added.

Canon USA Launches Countrywide Ink Cartridge Recycling Campaign

Canon has furthered its bid to be seen as an environmentally responsible company as it launched a nationwide ink cartridge recycling programme today, in partnership with FedEx, Sims Recycling Solutions and Close the Door.

Those using Canon PIXMA printers will now be able to drop off genuine Canon cartridges at any one of over 1,600 FedEx Print and Ship Centers across the US.

The empty ink cartridges will eventually reach Close the Loop, which specialises in removing components of ink cartridges to be used in other products.

The latest move is part of Canon's Generation Green initiative, which Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, imaging technologies and communications, said was a reaction to consumers becoming more aware of the environmental responsibilities everyone has.

"Environmental responsibility and awareness have always been a top priority for Canon, and recycling is one of the simplest yet most beneficial aspects of this," he added.

Canon's Generation Green initiative is designed to educate customers and consumers of the environmental and potentially cost-cutting benefits of ventures such as this.

Kodak Traceless Ad Printer Ink Service To Protect Manufacturers

Kodak has announced details of its Traceless Ad system, which it says will protect manufacturers from losing out to grey market activity.

The Kodak Traceless Ad system will utilise invisible printer ink and a proprietary detection system to print serial numbers on products, allowing brands to trace them to ensure they do not end up being reproduced or on sale though unofficial channels.

Dr Myra T Olm, Kodak's director of brand protection research and product development, said that this system would allow manufacturers to "aggressively" ward off grey market activities.

“Grey market activities disrupt manufacturers’ distribution channels and create artificially lowered prices, supply chain demand issues and unauthorised sales, she added.

The invisible ink used will be compatible with most solvent-based printers which take standard ink cartridges. Markings will be visible only via Kodak’s proprietary viewers, readers or scanners and will not be visible under any sort of UV light or other detection system.

Kodak recently also announced a cost-cutting Recipe Colour system, which allows companies to accurately predict what colours will look like when they come off the press.

Print Samsung Reveals The Biggest Bugbears In UK Offices

Print Samsung has revealed that the irritating habits of colleagues account for half of the UK's top ten office bugbears.

The electrical manufacturer's research also revealed that over two-thirds of workers get riled about slow IT systems and over two-fifths get frustrated with printer ink jams.

However, 45 per cent of staff stated that they believe printers are essential in their office and will be around in 20 years time.

But many employees also get frustrated with their colleagues for either talking too loud on their mobile phones, leaving the printer tray empty or even having an annoying ringtone.

Dion Smith, general manager at Print Samsung UK, commented: "As we celebrate a very successful 20 years in printing, it’s really encouraging to see that almost half of the respondents think that printers will continue to be an office essential over the next two decades, cementing the printer's ubiquitous status within the modern workplace."

Artefact Announces Prototype Concept For SWYP Printer

Artefact has released an innovative concept to alter the way people use printer ink products in the future.

The Seattle-based design firm claims that the SWYP (See What You Print) system could be the printer of the future with its touchscreen interface.

According to Artefact, this product is only a prototype, but it would seamlessly connect to cameras, PCs, phones and tablets.

Following this, the device would then reveal on the screen what documents can be printed, which users can tap to select, before cropping the images with their finger and hitting the print button.

"The design of SWYP shows that even familiar devices that have stagnated in terms of innovation can still be dramatically improved by making them simple and delightful to use," said Rob Girling, co-founder and principal of Artefact.

Canon Releases New uniFLOW Mobile Printer Ink System

Canon has released its uniFLOW version 5.1 single platform system designed to manage print and scanning processes that support mobile devices.

The printer ink firm's latest technology means it will make it easier for people to produce documents on its multifunctional devices, from smartphones to tablets.

According to Canon, the product can make the corporate print platform in organisations more efficient, cost effective and secure for remote technology users.

Nikki Paine, uniFLOW marketing manager at Canon, said: "Recent research found that over half of workers using smartphones can't print from their device, but want to.

"With uniFLOW v5.1, organisations can offer their staff flexible ways of working, including mobile printing."

Canon recently launched two new laser printer ink devices with its i-SENSYS LBP7680Cx and LBP7660Cdn products which take the Canon 718 toner cartridges.

The company noted that this latest series of machines have been built on an architecture consistent with the firm's imageRUNNER ADVANCE platform to improve managed print documents in enterprises.

Westcoast To Distribute Dell Printer Ink Products

Westcoast has sealed a deal to distribute Dell Printers' products to business consumers in the UK.

Dave McNally, head of imaging sales for Dell, noted that this partnership is only the second of its kind for the printer ink company.

According to Dell, the new link up has kicked off this month and will allow Westcoast to distribute a full range of ink and toner cartridge supplies and more.

Mr McNally told channelweb.co.uk: "We believe we are making significant strides in offering complete coverage to resellers across the UK. Westcoast demonstrated all the right credentials and plans that will enable us to grow our business."

Recently, Dell noted that during the second quarter of 2011, its services revenue was up six per cent on the first quarter of this year, and up 11 per cent from 12 months ago.

Brian Gladden, chief financial officer at the firm, added that developing higher-value solutions and services has helped drive its profitability.

Ghanaian Law Enforcement Has Seized Over 1000 Fake HP Ink Cartridges

HP has stated that Ghanaian law enforcement officers seized a significant amount of counterfeit ink cartridges during raids in May this year.

Following the operations, the authorities confiscated a total of 125 fake inkjet and 970 ready-to-use-for-sale counterfeit HP laser print cartridges.

The company noted that it expects there will be anti-counterfeit actions taken against those responsible for the illegal activity, from intelligence gathered through the raids.

General manager in the imaging and printing group at HP Africa Amr Hassan said: "People who buy counterfeit print cartridges and other fake merchandise believe mistakenly that they're receiving original products, and they deserve the high quality and performance for which they're paying."

Recently, HP stated that in the last four years, it has assisted in the seizure of almost nine million pieces of fake printing supplies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The company added that it works closely with local and global law enforcement forces to detect and remove illegal counterfeiting operations.

Printer Ink Firm HP Named A Leader In Document Output Sector

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has been named as a leader in the document output sector for customer communications, according to a report by Forrester Research.

The firm's Forrester Wave Document Output For Customer Communications Management survey revealed that the printer ink firm achieved top scores in the Current Offering and Market Presence for HP's Exstream 8.0.

According to the report, HP's technology can provide consumers with high-volume applications to increase their workflow.

Avi Greenfield, product manager at HP, said: "HP Exstream’s placement as a leader in the Forrester Wave report is substantiation that our strategy and focus on meeting customer needs is working."

Recently, HP announced that it will be introducing several new printer ink innovations, collaborations, apps and solutions to its product portfolio for small and medium-sized businesses.

Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president in imaging and printing, added that the company wants to build on its previous success and expand its growth in this market.

The new Aficio SP 4310N monochrome laser printer from Ricoh fits in with its managed document services (MDS) strategy.

This is according to the company, which claims the black and white machine will produce cost-effective prints for users and help reduce energy usage in firms.

Epson To Launch Three LabelWorks Printer Ink Devices

Epson is set to launch three new printer ink devices, designed to tackle the labelling needs of various organisations.

The firm noted that its latest LabelWorks LW-300 product is ideal for producing office labels, while the LW-400 is lightweight and designed for mobile use for any environment.

On top of this, there is the LW-900P, which has been created to connect to PCs or Macs and provide a high-quality desktop device for organisations.

Business development manager at Epson Neil Wilson said: "To help our customers get more labels for their money, our label makers minimise the margins of each label to prevent tape wastage."

The company also noted that all three devices will be available on the market from October 1st 2011.

Recently, Epson announced that it would be expanding its mobile and cloud printing services for consumers with smartphones and tablet products under its Epson Connect initiative, which is being launched this autumn.

Xerox claims that packaging firms could speed up their document production times with its latest iGen presses and toner cartridges.

The ink and printer manufacturer stated that its new series of devices can also help companies reduce their printing costs.

On top of this, Xerox noted that its iGen range products are also compliant with the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) guidelines for producing packaging for dry foods.

"FDA compliance is a significant advancement for Xerox and should open a new market for printers creating limited quantities of customised packages," said Joel Bienvenu, research manager in production prints at the International Data Corporation.

He added that the iGen4 printer ink presses can also improve the print quality and colour vibrancy of documents for manufacturers.

Xerox recently announced that its colour 800/1000 presses and its 700i and 700 machines will be powered by the latest EFI Fiery technology with the firm's EX Print Servers.

Kodak has displayed its newest CREO Colour Servers on Konica Minolta bizhub printer ink devices at Graph Expo 2011.

The firm showcased its IC-307 controllers on the machines at the tradeshow to highlight the efficiency of the latest software.

According to Kodak, the newest systems can significantly improve the overall productivity and performance in printer ink devices.

Konica Minolta also praised the efficiency of the IC-307 servers at the event.

Ricoh Unveils Its New ProTM C751 Series Printer Ink Range

Printer ink firm Ricoh has unveiled its new range of ProTM C751 Series digital print presses at Stationers' Hall for the UK market.

The company claims its latest devices can provide users with best-in-class ink resolutions and accurate documents through its innovative VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) technology.

On top of this, Ricoh noted that there are three models available in its new printer ink production printer range, including the Pro C651EX and ProC751EX scanner machines and the Pro C751 printer only product.

Samsung CLX-3185FW Outperform Inkjet Cartridges Alternatives

Samsung's UK Print Division has announced that the firm's CLX-3185FW laser printer has beaten alternative machines which use inkjet cartridges in testing.

The firm commissioned the independent Buyers Laboratory Inc (BLI) to compare the performance of three inkjet printers against the CLX-3185FW's newer technology and rate the printers on colour density, gloss, impact of highlighter overwriting, water fastness and drying time.

In a statement to USP magazine, Dion Smith, general manager at Samsung UK Print Division, said: "We know that more and more people are now working from home and we want to highlight that laser printers can provide better quality for their home office."

She added that businesses "can't afford not to use laser printers" and should look to upgrading their hardware.

Earlier this week, it was announced that three of Xerox printer ink presses will include the latest EFI Fiery System 10 technology. The models included are the Xerox 800/1000 and 700i and 700 digital colour machines.

Edible Ink Secret To Soon-to-be-launched 3D Food Printers

Printer technology has rapidly leapt forward in recent years – as the development of the 3D food printer demonstrates.

The device, produced by US startup firm Essential Dynamics uses edible printer inks in order to create tasty morsels through the gadget.

Company founder Jamil Yosefzai commented: "As time passes, 3D food printing will go from novelty…to utility…to indispensability."

The Essential Dynamics product is set to launch in the near future, with a $1,000 (£635) price tag initially – but scientists from Cornell Creative Machines Lab (CCML) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are also battling to bring the technology to life.

Hod Lipson, head of the CCML lab, told fastcompany.com: "It's a huge 'design space,' and the combination of tastes and textures, geometries and colours that can be achieved is enormous."

Last week, HP unveiled 13 new products at the Printing Conference in Shanghai – one of which was a multi-function printer capable of scanning 3D images.

UK Workers Printing Less Documents This Year

British workers are printing less business documents than 12 months ago in a bid to be more environmentally friendly.

This is according to research by printer ink firm Lexmark, which found that 73 per cent of respondents to its poll stated they made less paper copies of emails this year than they did in 2010.

Meanwhile, a further 53 per cent stated that they had cut back on printing general company and marketing documents.

However, in some cases the green message was ignored, with over 60 per cent admitting they forgot to change their machines to the duplex setting, which is more environmentally friendly and cost efficient as it prints on both sides.

Gary Bourland, country general manager for Lexmark, added: "It is heartening to see from this poll that over the past year people have been more environmentally conscious and are now printing less in their everyday tasks."

Lexmark recently released its T650 Series scanner, which it claims improves the efficiency of a number of its printer ink devices as an add-on feature.

Printer Ink Company HP Develop Web Printers

Technology firm HP is planning to make greater use of cloud-based technologies in ink printers, prompting the world's largest technology firm to write the next chapter in the e-printer market.

Unlike conventional printers, HP's web-connected models will be fully connected to the web, complete with their own email addresses that users can access from anywhere in the world to send documents for printing.

"The conventional printer market is mature and has low margins because of price wars, but this is a new business model," said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice-president for the imaging and printing group of HP. Mr Joshi said global web-connected printer sales are expected to reach 50 million units by 2012, up from an expected 20 million this year.

HP is introducing the e-print home and Biz mobile applications serving mobile handsets operating on Google's Android system, Apple's iOS and Symbian.

HP has launched a new app with a built-in scanning feature in a bid to prevent consumers buying fake ink cartridges.

The new eSupplies app, available on iOS devices, will help people prevent printer damage through use of counterfeit products.

According to cnet.com, HP claims that 58 per cent of customers in China who purchase the bogus products do so unknowingly, but this can be prevented when they use the new application.

It has a built-in QR code scanner, which is able to identify whether the ink cartridge is authentic.

Furthermore, it can help tell the customer which cartridge will be suitable for their printer and offers an option to purchase online.

These cartridges may come in useful for the new range of printers launched this week by HP.

Five of the best free iPhone printing apps were recently highlighted by PC Advisor. It recommended HP ePrint Home & Biz, Canon Easy PhotoPrint and the Epson iPrint, among others.

Kodak Unveil New Printer Range

Kodak has unveiled a new range of printers that are compatible with Google Cloud PrintReady.

The four all-in-one printers, Hero 5.1, Hero 7.1, Hero 9.1 and Office Hero 6.1 allow users to print documents and photos from anywhere in the world using any device connected to the internet, without the need of a PC or drivers.

Users will also be able to use Kodak Email PrintReady to send printing jobs and receive prints from third parties.

The new printers come complete with Kodak's proprietary pigment-based printer ink that is longer lasting than regular ink cartridges and is smudge, water and fade resistant.

Moreover, the printers feature Kodak's Smart Sensor technology, which predicts the time it will take to complete a job and automatically identifies paper, size and amount.

The Hero 5.1, Hero 7.1 and Hero 9.1 all have a print resolution of 9600 optimised dpi, while the Hero 6.1 prints at 4800 optimised dpi. The 7.1 and 9.1 both feature touch screen technology, while the Office Hero 6.1 comes with automatic copying, scanning, faxing and two-sided printing.

Epson Launches Small-in-one Printer

Epson has unveiled a new, small, all-in-one printer aimed at space-conscious consumers.

The so-called "small-in-one" Epson Stylus NX430 printer measures in at just 15.4 inches by 11.8 inches by 5.7 inches and weighs nine pounds.

Epson's new miniature offering is significantly smaller than other AIO printers and comes with fully integrated wireless connectivity, which allows users to print directly from their network.

The NX430 also supports cloud printing and comes with a 2.5-inch LCD screen and smart touch panel for selecting and printing photos. The printer features a separate colour ink cartridge that is smear and smudge-resistant.

Kristi Lanzit, Epson's product manager of consumer ink jets, said: "Consumers will be amazed with the compact size and powerful performance of the Epson Stylus NX430.

"The name small-in-one says it all; no other printer offers such great performance in a small size - guaranteed."

Kodak has also recently unveiled a range of printers that feature smudge-free ink - the Hero range, which is compatible with Google Cloud PrintReady.

Google Cloud Print Allows Wireless Printing To Epson Machines

Google Cloud Print will soon be compatible with Epson printer ink devices, according to the office supplies giant.

It said that its major new models will work with the application from autumn 2011, allowing people on the move to print out documents at any time and from anywhere in the world.

Those using Gmail and Google Docs for mobile will be able to access the wireless solution, while Chromebook users will also be able to churn out documents without the need to install any drivers or have any cables plugged in.

Ian Cameron, general manager of global communications at Epson, said: "Epson is all about providing customers with the maximum possible value. Combining Epson's state-of-the-art printers for enterprise and the home together with the options offered by Google Cloud Print, liberates busy Epson customers by allowing them to print whenever and from wherever they want."

According to Google, cloud printing has "tremendous benefits" to end users and for the industry as a whole, and is going to become the norm in the coming years.

Epson Announces AirPrint Compatibility

Epson has announced that printer ink users will soon be able to churn out documents from their Apple devices over a wireless connection.

It said that AirPrint will be supported on most major models of the firm's inkjet printers from later this month. This will mean that people using an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch can connect to an Epson machine and send emails or documents for printing.

Ian Cameron, general manager of global communications at the company, said: "We're delighted users of Epson's AirPrint-enabled printers will now be able to print directly from their iOS devices. With AirPrint, no software or setup is required, so documents, photos and emails can be quickly and easily printed to any AirPrint-enabled Epson printer."

AirPrint can be used on the original iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch third generation, providing the devices are running iOS 4.2 or later. Apple added that AirPrint works with Safari, Mail, Photos, iWork, PDFs in iBooks and other third-party applications.

Toner Cartridges Should Be Considered For Home Computing

Brits with a home computing setup have been told to consider a combination of toner cartridges and laser printers if they are looking to save money.

A letter to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette asked what the best ways were of cutting down on ink usage and expense.

The reply stated that a monochrome option was one choice to reduce the amount of money spent on ink, although the toner unit will need to be replaced once in a while.

"If you do use colour at home, my recommendation is to have two printers. Get a colour all-in-one for scanning and colour printing and the laser for everything else. This is what I have done for years, and it works great," advised the publication's expert.

They added that a laser printer is capable of saving home technology fans money, while also making the process of document production hassle-free.

Recently, HP released its smallest multifunction LaserJet Pro 100, which is capable of printing, scanning and copying information from one machine.

The company believes that the new device will upgrade its short-run publishing capabilities in the future.

HP has announced the launch of its VirtualSystem for VMware, which it claims will significantly improve infrastructure and workload speeds for companies.

The printer ink and technology manufacturer believes that this system for cloud computing users can make it easier for businesses to store and access documents and information.

According to HP, this virtualisation technology makes it simpler for users to identify system errors and improve the management in various areas of their organisation from consulting and planning through to workflow deployment and support services

Jet Mail Services has expanded its printer ink portfolio and significantly improved its overall productivity after installing three Konica Minolta bizhub Press C8000 digital devices.

The company decided to invest in the latest products from the toner cartridge firm because it was looking for new applications to develop its document processing capabilities.

Since the three machines were installed in July this year, Jet Mail Services has not only taken on new clients but noted a significant improvement in the quality of its output.

Printer ink firm Canon has introduced two new cost-effective and energy-efficient devices to its PIXMA series.

According to the firm, its PIXMA MG8220 and PIXMA MG6220 All-In-One (AIO) models are perfect for any avid photo printer.

On top of this, the devices allow people to produce scanned, copied and printed documents at an affordable price.

Canon also noted that users can send their images directly to one of its PIXMA products straight from their smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop once they have downloaded the company's Easy-PhotoPrint app.

Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager at the organisation, said: "We feel the upgrades made for these two PIXMA AIO models provide consumers with a host of new features without forgoing our high-quality output."

Canon recently noted that its imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5000 series multifunction printers received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' Common Criteria Certification for conforming to its 2600.1 security standard.

Taws Printers Invests In Two Ricoh Ink Devices

Taws Printers has completed its investment in two printer ink products from Ricoh to help strengthen its document production processes.

The firm has bought a Ricoh Pro C901S Graphic Arts Edition colour press and a pro 907EX black-and-white device to boost its digital operations

Vish Patel, owner of Taws Printers, added: "We have been closely monitoring Ricoh's progress in the professional print sector and believe the company has an understanding of the digital print requirements an existing litho print supplier needs."

Professional print solutions marketing manager at Ricoh, Karen Lawrence, said that the firm has worked for a number of years with Taws Printers to deliver efficient presses to improve the company's document workflows.

Ricoh's customer sustainability programme recently won the top prize in the European Foundation for Quality Management's (EFQM) Sustainability Good Practice Competition.

According to the EFQM judging panel, it received the honour for its excellent ethical mindset, clear values and high standards in improving printer ink environments.

Kodak and IDEAlliance have teamed up to provide online webinars to help printer ink providers improve their business efficiency.

The six session series entitled "From Print Service to Solution Provider" will be hosted for free on IdeasOnline.

According to Kodak, industry professionals and experts will demonstrate how firms can capitalise on their printer ink operations, processes and increase their overall return on investment.

The first webinar was on Thursday (August 18th) and they will run through to December 8th.

Judy Pribe, vice-president of Kodak's business solutions and services unit, said: "Kodak is committed to working with its customers to ensure success on every level.

"This webinar series will provide an ideal forum to interact with customers and show them how to leverage today’s digital technologies to increase productivity and foster business growth."

Recently, Kodak revealed that in its second quarter business results for 2011, consumer and commercial inkjet packages and solutions increased by 22 per cent.

Firms Can Save On Their Energy Costs By Turning Printer Ink Devices Off

Companies looking to save money on their energy consumption could improve their efficiency by making changes to their printer ink environment.

This is according to Business Cost Consultants, which claims that small alterations such as turning off inkjet and laser printers, PC monitors, photocopiers and scanners in the evening can significantly reduce the amount of electricity being wasted in offices.

On top of this, the company noted that informing and teaching the workforce about these eco-friendly techniques will help ensure energy savings can be made.

Donald Maclean, managing director at Business Cost Consultants, said: "Staff should also be encouraged to print double-sided to reduce wastage and use email as much as possible to reduce the need to print."

Recently, Which? noted that businesses should not pay for extra features on printer ink devices that they will not use.

However, Katie Waller, senior researcher at the firm, noted that one system that is useful is auto duplexing. This technology helps people to save on paper costs by automatically printing on both sides of sheets.

Xerox To Provide Cisco with managed Printer Ink Services And Solutions

Xerox will manage the printer operations for the Cisco workforce to improve the firm's document production solutions.

The printer ink company will service over 460 of Cisco's offices in a bid to reduce the company's costs and improve its print environment by 20 per cent.

According to Xerox, it will install its enterprise print services, which is a cloud-based platform, into the Cisco's production system that will allow employees to securely send documents to any machine from any device, anytime and anywhere.

Sheila Jordan, vice-president in communication and collaboration in IT at Cisco, said: "The new print environment will help employees make cost effective and environmentally sensitive printing decisions on a daily basis, and give them access to printed documents when they travel to another office, or even to a hotel."

Recently, Xerox appointed Martin Boyle as the general manger for its operations in Scotland and Ireland, where he will lead the company's direct and indirect sales teams.

Printer Ink Firm Ricoh Wins Oekom Research Prime Status

Printer ink firm Ricoh has been awarded 'Prime' status by oekom research for its product reusability and recycling work.

The company was honoured with the accolade after implementing an ambitious programme to reduce the energy consumption of its devices and trying to extend the life of its products.

On top of this, Ricoh has stated that by 2050, it aims to reduce its environmental impact by 87.5 per cent when compared to its levels in 2000.

The head of corporate social responsibility at Ricoh, James Deacon, added: "We are delighted to be independently recognised by oekom research for our activities, and pledge to further our commitment to society and the environment.

Recently, the ink manufacturer Ricoh released a new A4 desktop printer, which it claims is highly productive, reliable and affordable.

France Affiches Expands Its Printer Ink Services With New HP Products

The company has bought the HP Scitex XP5100 printer as part of a new business programme.

Chief executive of France Affiches, Angelina Fontana, added: "The speed of the HP Scitex XP5100 Printer increases our capacity, while its versatility enables us to extend our applications offering to customers seeking a broader service from one supplier."

Recently, the ink cartridge company HP announced that during the first quarter of 2011, it sold around three million printer ink product units in India.

Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president in imaging and printing group at HP, added that the innovation of web-connected and cloud printing has helped push this sales growth and by the end of 2011 it hopes over 20 million units will be sold.

Brother Launches Its DCP-J125 Printer Ink Series

According to Cliff Joseph, a technology specialist at PC Advisor, the machine is sturdy and can look good in any bedroom, home or office.
