New York-based company DBA have created the first ever commercial 98% biodegradable pen - named somewhat
unsurprisingly the DBA 98. The DBA 98 Pen has been designed and manufactured with a careful eye for detail, beginning with its simple and elegant design.
DBA are quick to note that apart from the roller ball and nib, everything from the cap, to the reservoir, to even the ink it writes with is completely biodegradable and non-toxic. The DBA 98’s casing in particular deserves special mention for being made from a potato-based bio-plastic. Furthermore, the pen boasts FSC-certified packaging that is made from 100% recycled paper and printed with vegetable inks.
We here at Internet-ink are all for ecologically friendly ways of disposing our unwanted waste, but when it comes to writing instruments, we would rather have a solid pen that lasts a lifetime - such as one from of our many fountain pen ranges.

Mont Blanc has been told to remove the image of Mahatma Gandhi from its £16,000 white gold ink cartridge fountain pen.
Luxury pen manufacturer Mont Blanc has been told to remove the image of Mahatma Gandhi from its £16,000 white gold ink cartridge fountain pen by an Indian court, the Times reports.
The case ruled that that German firm had to stop selling the luxury pen and its ink cartridges after outraged protestors had said it "degraded everything that Gandhi symbolised".
Said pen featured a rhodium-plated nib on which was an image of Gandhi and was released in October 2009 to coincide with the 140th anniversary of his birth, but protestors claimed that such a frugal man would have not supported such a lavish purchase.
The firm's spokesperson argued that "It's not an opulent pen. It's a writing instrument that's very pure" while Tushar Gandhi, one of the Mahatama's great-grandchildren, had no issue with the device which uses ink cartridges.
He told the paper: "People are being deprived of the right to commemorate Gandhi and that's a very un-Gandhian thing to do."

Florentine ink pen 'made of lava'
An Italian fountain pen maker has created an ink pen made from solidified lava.
Named Homo Sapien, the pen is made with a palladium nib to avoid corrosion and is virtually indestructible, according to creators Visconti Pens.
Dante Del Vecchio, founder of the Florentine company, said: "The Homo Sapien has a feel unlike any other fountain pen. It is virtually shatter proof. You can even boil it. The pen can withstand heat up to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) without being melted as would be the case with regular resin or celluloid.
"Because the nib contains virtually no alloy, it is significantly less susceptible to corrosion from ink. As a result, you will feel like you are writing on a cloud … As a result, fountain pen users will have the capability to add calligraphic flair to their writing."
Visconti said that the lava used to create the collection of pens comes from Mount Etna, situated on the island of Sicily and known as "the largest active volcano in Europe".

A pen shaped like a bullet has become available for consumer purchase.
However, the pen contains a special ink cartridge which gives it the ability to write seamlessly in such difficult conditions.
The cartridge, which was designed to be used for writing in a zero-gravity environment, can write at absolutely any angle, including upside down.
As well as being shaped like a .375 calibre bullet and made from a real magnum cartridge, the pen also allows users to write seamlessly underwater, should they be able to find apparatus to write on.
The ink in the pen, can also write on surfaces that are covered in grease or oil and is capable of working in extreme temperatures.
Utilising specialised thixotropic ink, the pen can also run for three times as long as pens which use normal ink.
