Lexmark Settles With Firms Over Toner Cartridges Patents Lexmark has reached settlements with ten of the 24 US firms it sued over alleged patent violations of replacement toner cartridges. The firm had claimed that the manufacture, importation and sale by the relevant companies for various devices infringed its patent rights. Financial terms of the settlements have not been disclosed. The 'Settling Parties' are: Alpha Image Tech, E-Toner Mart Inc, Nano Pacific Corp, Ninestar Image Co, Ninestar Image International Ltd, Ninestar Technology Co, Print-Rite Holdings Ltd, Seine Image International Co, Union Technology International (M.C.O.) Co and Ziprint Image Corp. "While the Settling Parties did not admit any wrongdoing, they have confirmed their ongoing commitment to respect intellectual property rights by resolving the litigation amicably," Lexmark said in a statement. Lexmark's 2010 sales were driven by sales of its laser printers, the firm said when it posted its financial results recently. The firm made more than half a billion dollars in net cash, with more than 0 million (£92.5 million) generated in the last three months of the year. Posted by Johnny McMaster.

Survey Shows Office Workers Embarrassed About Their Fax Machines Toner cartridges maker Lexmark's survey of 450 European home and office workers reveals that a fondness for fax machines and printers is being overtaken by a penchant for desktop computers and laptops. Of those surveyed about office equipment style and design, 72 per cent said they considered the "most stylish" piece of equipment on their desk to be their computer. Older office devices haven't quite stood the test of time, with faxes and printers chosen as the least stylish. One in four even admitted they would hide their fax from other people, embarrassed by its size or outmoded design. And when it comes to design, two-fifths of office workers prefer black-coloured equipment, followed by 25 per cent who would opt for white. Two thirds said they would pay more for equipment if it looked sleek and stylish. "We're entering a new era of style on the desktop where sleek looks and design meet advanced technology," said Steve Purdy, country general manager at Lexmark UK. Lexmark recently released its Genesis printer, heralded as a major new device for the printer market. Posted by Barry Ashmore.

Recycling Ink Cartridges Offers Considerable Eco Benefits Recycling toner cartridges reduces the carbon footprint of that cartridge by up to 60 per cent, a new report from Lexmark shows. The firm released the findings in its Life Cycle Assessment study, which examined the eco impact of toner cartridges that are thrown away, Trade Arabia reported. In order to reduce waste and help the environment, Lexmark advises its customers to only print what they need, use double-sided prints, and use paperless tools, like scan to email. High yield ink and toner cartridges also help reduce waste. "Lexmark has made it a priority to educate its customers on what steps they can take to implement responsible printing practices, such as printing less and recycling, to reduce the negative impact to the environment," said Mohammed Addarrat, general manager of Lexmark International Middle East, the news provider reported. Managed Print Services Could Stop Employee Theft Adopting managed print services could control corporate theft, one expert has said. Edward Crowley, writing for mpsinsights.com, highlighted the recent case of Marque Gumbs, a former employee at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York, who has been accused of stealing almost million (£2.5 million) in toner cartridges from his employer. Gumbs ordered the cartridges through the hospital, reselling them to fuel a luxury lifestyle of property and flash cars. According to Crowley, while managed print services - available from providers like Hewlett-Packard and Lexmark - are known help firms save money and improve productivity, they could also be useful in keeping a lid on worker theft. "The reality is that the unmanaged nature of printing invites employee theft," Crowley wrote. While the Gumbs case is admittedly unusual, smaller-scale theft takes place all the time, whether its employees printing personal documents at work or taking an ink cartridge home with them. "Since the cost of imaging (printing, copying and faxing) documents is highly decentralised, without some type of managed print services program to centrally monitor asset deployment and usage, the potential for shrinkage is dramatic," Crowley wrote. Given the "highly-unmanaged, high-risk" nature of document production in the work place, businesses may find a managed print service very valuable indeed. Posted by Nicole Stevens.

Office Managers Happy to Muck In and Change Printer Toner Cartridges Managers are now more willing to help undertake tasks like changing the office printer ink cartridge or stocking up a printer with more paper. According to recent research undertaken by Lexmark, almost two-thirds (63 per cent) of European office managers are performing more menial tasks to try to help their companies. In a survey of 514 staff in management positions across Europe, the most common chores bosses are now doing include filling the printer or photocopier up with paper (24 per cent), answering the phone (24 per cent), and making tea and coffee (17 per cent). Some 12 per cent are commonly changing printer toner (12 per cent) and placing the stationery order (7 per cent). The main reason suggested for this was that given staff reductions there were simpler fewer people to cover all the necessary tasks (37 per cent). "In the current economic climate, there seems to be a real sense of staff working together to help their organisations through these difficult times," said Steve Purdy, country general manager, Lexmark UK. "Senior managers are increasingly getting involved in more of the day-to-day administration within their offices, but few resent this. Many see it as a necessity to support their business in a bid to better control costs," he added. Last month (October 26th), Lexmark announced the transition of its chief executive officer; Paul Rooke will replace Paul J. Curlander. Posted by Johnny McMaster.

Lexmark Launches New Rewards Scheme Printer ink maker Lexmark this week announced details of a new customer reward scheme it says will save people money and help contribute to the environment. The UK Lexmark Rewards Scheme is available to all C54x and X54x Series colour laser printer owners. All they need to do is log on and register some details to make savings. Consumers can sign on at lexmarkrewards.com. The printer ink maker will send out a free imaging kit whenever a user's printer needs one, as long as the customer owns the laser printer and uses and returns Lexmark toner cartridges (they must be genuine). Also, customers will receive a free high yield toner for every ten toner cartridges returned for recycling. And two free credits are added to customers' accounts upon registration for the scheme. Steve Purdy, general manager of Lexmark UK, said: "By signing up, they can guarantee saving on printing costs as they earn credits to redeem free consumables. We’re aiming to help our users to think about the way they consume their printer supplies by recycling as much as possible, and we’re proud to support their efforts with this new scheme." Printer ink maker Lexmark recently announced the appointment of a new supplies director, Chris Law. Posted by Canzil Ahmed.

Lexmarks C736DN Is Surprisingly Discreet Posted by Jim Ottewill The new Lexmark C736dn has been described as "surprisingly discreet" in a new review. Writing for Register Hardware, Simon Williams said that the printing costs are reasonable for a machine of its size. The price of ink equates to 1.15 pence for black ink per page of and 8.42 pence for colour. Mr Williams praised the quality of the printed text although the actual speed recorded during the review are not as fast the the headline rates advertised. According to the reviewer, the Lexmark demonstrated a printing speed of 15.8 page per minute (ppm), which was less than half the quoted speed. Using the C736dn to print a 20-page document increased the speed, but to 25.5 ppm and not the 33 ppm advertised. He stated: "This is a robust, workgroup workhorse, with plenty of room for expansion. It's fast, even in duplex mode, and the print quality is more than adequate for general business use. "PIN-protected, walk-up printing is a useful bonus and the machine is widely compatible with a range of operating systems, but maintenance is more fiddly than it should." Lexmark Integrates RFID Solution With Toner Cartridge Based Laser Printer Lexmark has unveiled a new monochrome laser printer with toner cartridges that also has built-in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The device, which is being marketed as a solution to help manufacturing businesses track and tag their assets, can print RFID labels that provide real-time visibility, as well as regular office documents. Designed as an add-on accessory, the RFID option replaces a drawer on the Lexmark T654 monochrome laser printer, which uses toner cartridges. "Lexmark's newest RFID solution is leading-edge technology that helps our customers in key vertical markets, such as manufacturing and healthcare, to reduce errors and streamline processes," said Marty Canning, vice-president of the company. "In addition, customers can also use the device to print and manage their everyday business documents, eliminating the need for and costs associated with operating multiple, single-use devices." Meanwhile, IT Pro has praised the C736dn office laser printer for the large capacity of its toner cartridges. Social Bookmarking Links Subscribe to RSS news feed Follow us on
