Man Charged With Stealing 4 Million Dollars In Toner Cartridges From Hospital

A former hospital employee has been accused of stealing close to $4 million (£2.5 million) in toner cartridges from his old employer. Marque Gumbs, who worked as an administrative worker at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Hospital, a well-known cancer centre in New York, is charged with grand larceny after allegedly undertaking the scam from 2004 to late this year, Reuters reported.

The 32-year-old's con was to order toner cartridges through the hospital, reselling them and living a life of luxury property and cars, Reuters reported prosecutors as arguing. In under a year, Gumbs had racked-up over $1.2 million in toner cartridges that were not even compatible with any devices at Memorial-Sloan. He has since been fired from his post.

Gumbs' lawyer, Mark Jay Heller, told Reuters: "In order to steal $3.8 million over a six-year period, my client would have had to steal 40,000 toner cartridges." He added that the hospital was not in proper charge of its finances if it allowed so many cartridges to be ordered. "The hospital was embarrassed of learning of this waste and upon an audit, they decided to throw my client under the bus, or should I say hospital ambulance," Heller told the news agency.
