Schools ink cartridge recycling raises money

A school in Des Moines, Iowa has set an example to homes and offices alike by raising thousands of dollars from the recycling of ink cartridges.

A school in Des Moines, Iowa helped pay for the construction a school mural by raising thousands of dollars from the recycling of, among other things, ink cartridges, the Des Moines register reports.

Both homes and offices can waste money and damage the environment by irresponsibly disposing of ink cartridges, toner cartridges and other printer inks, but by taking notice of the pupils of Brody Middle School they could get back on the right path.

Currently, Brody students have raised almost $3,200 of the $4,000 needed to pay for their share of the mural project and they did this mostly by recycling cans, bottles, cell phones and used ink cartridges.

Commenting on the mural and the recycling pledge, principal Randy Gordon told the paper: "We've been trying to be environmentally focused, and this will put kids outdoors.

"The whole thing just kind of evolved. It started out as a place for kids who were not well to be out during recess, but it evolved into a classroom, a place where teachers can capture the spirit of the outdoors."
