If you find your ink cartridges often run out sooner than you expect, don't blame the cartridge's poor performance - it might be because you're lacking purpose.

And with toner cartridges not being the cheapest products on the market, it's important to make sure you get the best out of the ones that you do buy.

According to technology blog If It Prints, I'll Let You Know, by defining your printing purpose you can cut down on wasted ink. Let's say you're printing a large user manual out for the new computer you've bought - do you really need to do a job lot? Consider what bits you don't need and just don't print them. You'll save time and ink in the process.

And if some of the manual is in colour, why not print it out in black and white? Do you really need the full-colour cover, for example?

If you still find you're using up a lot of ink, you might want to open a window - or turn the central heating up. According to the blog, temperature can have a significant impact on the quality of your cartridges.

"Having temperatures that are just right, not too cold nor too hot, can make your ink cartridges perform better and last longer," it said.
