First, only print what is absolutely necessary. Economise on your print use, don't print out documents you don't need – you'd just be wasting ink. Use print preview. Nearly all printers, especially those from the big brands, come with printer drivers that feature print preview functions. This is a really useful method, especially for printing from the web.

Printer not in use? Switch it off. You'd switch off your computer when you'd finished using it, so why not your printer? Doing so is good practice, as leaving it on could cause the printer ink to dry up.
