Business Chief says Lets Keep the Printer Ink Fakers At Bay

The counterfeit product trade is costing manufacturers £4 billion a year, it has been stated.

Writing for Packaging News, Donny Gillies, sales director with the MSO group, said that amount is lost to counterfeiters who are "stealing" makers' profits by selling shoddy versions of goods to consumers.

And Mr Gillies notes that such products rarely compare to the genuine product, although it may be impossible to tell them apart.

"Impossible that is until you try to use them. Print cartridges that should deliver 100 cycles will run out after only 20. The ink will leak and smudge. And one manufacturer I know of faces an annual loss of £10 million - £12 million as a result."

However, thankfully there exists the technology to counter to the counterfeiters, Mr Gillies said. There are methods that can help manufacturers to protect the codes linked to specific products, so criminals have no way of accessing them.

Last month printer ink cartridges maker Hewlett Packard praised a toner cartridges counterfeiting operation in Manilla Metro.
