Volunteering Programme Coordinates Ink Cartridge Recycling

Ink cartridges are being processed and recycled by an American volunteering agency in an attempt to reduce waste.

The scheme, which also recycles mobile phones, is part of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Kittitas County, Washington State, the Daily Record reported .

Since the programme began in 2003, over 18,000 ink cartridges and mobile phones have been recycled.

The cartridges are refilled and resold to the community at reduced prices, which also generates some income for the scheme.

Speaking to the news source, Carol Findley, director of RSVP, said: "We're probably the largest volunteer agency in the county in terms of the number of volunteers and the locations where we have placement."

Washington State has a long history of green activity, with the state's department of ecology regularly running schemes to not only increase the amount of recycling done in the territory, but to combat threats such as climate change and toxic affects on the ecosystem.
