Kodak's Cheap To Run Claims Analysed

A website has studied whether printer manufacturer Kodak's assertion that its devices are cheap to run is really true.

Expert Reviews looked at the ESP 7 multifunction inkjet and found it can be cost-effective to run, but the recent adverts do not tell the "whole story".

The site said the printer utilises a dedicated black ink cartridge for text printing, but includes a combined-colour cartridge when it is doing photo and colour documents.

As a result, users have to "replace the whole thing as soon as any one colour runs out".

"This is unusual for a printer that costs over £150," it adds.

Using a standard Kodak black ink cartridge, the site calculated costs of 2p per page. In colour tests, using a Kodak cartridge, a total of 152 pages were printed before it ran out of ink - equating to cost of 6.6p per page of colour and 8.6p per mixed-colour page.

The ESP 7 also includes Wi-Fi printing and Ethernet connectivity. The manufacturer claims users can save up to 50 per cent on everything they print compared to similar products.
