IEEE Printer Security Standard Launched

A new IEEE security standard has been launched specifically for printers, it has been suggested.

According to darkreading.com, it is not just paper and ink supplies that businesses need to worry about with modern-day, network-enabled devices.

In fact, web-connected printers often act as an all-too-obvious chink in an organisation's IT defences.

The website reported that the new internationally-recognised standard could help address this growing issue, however, adding that it provides manufacturers with specifications for building more secure devices.

Larry Kovnat, a security expert at Xerox, told the website: "The device sitting in the hallway often gets overlooked, but printers have computers and disks in them and they are in the network.

"You've got to treat them like another computer node and make sure you put the right controls on them."

Recently, technology expert Larry Magid suggested that there are a number of different ways that users can save money while printing including refilling toner cartridges.
