Birmingham Celebrates Paper Mill Milestone

Over 200 people assembled at Birmingham Town Hall recently to commemorate 150 years of paper development in the city.

They were marking the Smurfit Kappa SSK Paper Mill's 150th year of activity, as the development plays a key role when it comes to boosting local employment and decreasing the carbon footprint of the city.

Birmingham City Council’s environment director Sharon Lea said: " From 1993, when just 750 tonnes of paper was segregated for recycling, the relationship between both organisations had become increasingly important to the local economy."

In the current day, almost 40,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard are processed at the mill, ready for ink to be printed onto them.

Recently, HP announced that it will manufacture a new range of lightweight paper called HP Paper Thin, which is set to be available in Europe by the end of 2012 or early 2013.

The firm believes that the product will be able to lower the environmental impact caused by printing by 28 per cent.
