Recession Business Woes Hit Printer Industry

Sales of ink cartridges and printers fell for the first time ever in 2009.
Businesses' cutbacks during the recession have caused the first ever fall in profits for the printer and ink cartridge industries, according to new research.

For the first time ever, year-on-year profits in the sales of printer and ink consumables declined by two per cent in 2009 from the previous year's figures, a report from industry analysts Lyra Research has found.

However, the group argues that there is some encouraging news ahead for the sector, with all of the toner cartridge segments of the printer market projected to grow through to 2013.

Andrew Lippman, a senior analyst at Lyra Research, added: "Print volumes for desktop inkjet printers are expected to begin growing rapidly in 2012 as the technology enters more and more small office environments."

He also said that this rise would correspond in the increased sales of inkjet printer consumables such as ink cartridges.

As well as businesses purchasing less equipment, Lyra Research commented that vendors reducing their stock during the downturn also contributed to the drop in sales.
