HP ordered to pay $184 million to Cornell

This time it is HP accused of patent infringement...

Hewlett-Packard was recently ordered by a federal jury to pay millions for patent infringement of data-processing procedures used at Cornell University.

A federal jury in Syracuse,, New York has concluded a trial by ordering HP to pay Cornell University about $184.044 million USD for using Cornell-patented computer technology without permission.

Cornell, Ithaca, New York, accused Hewlett Packard, Palo Alto, California, of infringing on the data-processing patent in 2001.

The jury verdict was rendered to U.S. Federal Circuit Court Randall R. Rader May 30, 2008.

In a statement, Emma McCulloch of HP Corporate Media Relations said, “"We respect the jury's decision, though we don't agree with it. HP respects the intellectual property rights of other companies and organizations around the world, and likewise protects and enforces its own intellectual property rights. HP and Cornell have maintained a strong relationship over the years, and we look forward to renewing that strong relationship."
