Printer manufacturer urges customers to recycle old printers

Canon New Zealand is testing a new scheme to get consumers to recycle their old printers.

Printer firm Canon New Zealand is to trial a new scheme to get consumers to recycle their old printers as understanding of the need to recycle printers and ink cartridges continues to grow.

During this month anyone who purchases a Canon PIXMA inkjet printer at a particular retail outlet is being encouraged to bring in their old inkjet or laser printer of any make and condition.

These old printers will be sent to a recycling firm to be broken down and recycled, and as a way of saying thank you and confirming the validity of the initiative, consumers will receive a 20 per cent discount off their next Canon printer purchase.

Robert de Jeu, brand manager of print solutions at Canon New Zealand, said: "This is the first time we have offered a recycling programme like this, which builds on our philosophy of product life cycle management.

"Many people have obsolete printers they wish to replace or upgrade and would simply throw them into the rubbish. This initiative will stop that waste from ending up in landfills."

Canon also has a number of other recycling programmes in place that include an ink cartridge and toner cartridge collection and recycling service.
