If you are looking for a versatile printer that not only prints documents quickly but also produces excellent quality photos, prints to DVD and can be linked both to your computer and will also accept memory cards for direct print jobs, the Epson Stylus R360 is the printer for you!
I initially bought the R360 to replace the similar R300 which Epson seem to have discontinued. They are very similar printers, but the R360 is slightly larger and the user interface has been vastly improved.
I purchased the Epson R360 to print directly onto DVDs. I purchased my R360 for about £85 and it is by far the cheapest printer for the job, and one of the few that has so many additional printing features. The software includes a DVD/CD designer which is very easy to use and produces very professional results. The DVD/CD printing tray has to be individually loaded which does slow printing if you are looking to print a lot of DVDs, but if you are on a budget it’s a fair sacrifice to pay. The only down side is you don’t get a USB cable included. This is not such a problem these days as many people have already had to shell out for one for a previous printer. However, a word to the wise, if you buy the printer from PC world, don’t get ripped off by the prices of their USB cables as they often cost about £10!
The main addition to this new model is the large central screen which allows you to set up the printer and also to control print jobs if you are not printing via a pc. Below this is a covered flip-down section for memory cards. The control panel is pretty easy to use, but I tend to control printing via my pc.
In terms of standard printing, the Epson R360 is a top loading printer and can quickly and smoothly print on a variety of papers. The printing options are pretty varied – from draft to best photo. With new ink, the print quality for documents is fantastic even on the draft setting. It takes pretty thick paper/thin card although I’ve not tested thicker card.
However, it’s when printing photos that the R360 really comes into its own. The quality, obviously dependant on the paper you use, is as close as you can get to commercial quality. The printer will accept paper ranging from matt to high gloss and everything in-between. The added flexibility of memory card ports means that you can print directly from the camera, although to be honest I prefer to check my pics on the computer before I print them.
The R360 owes its high print quality to the 6 ink cartridges required. I was concerned that these might prove pricey to replace, and Epson’s own brand cartridges ARE expensive. However, locally I have been able to buy generic replacements for £10. Each cartridge is individually replicable, so if you are buying separately, you’ll soon learn which colours you run out of first. That said, I’ve found the ink usage to be pretty low considering the quality, although I do tend to mainly use the printer as a bog standard document printer.
In terms of looks, the Epson R360 is pretty sturdy looking. Put it this way, it isn't going to win any style awards. It’s not ugly, and its certainly better looking than its predecessor, the R300, but it is pretty big – standing by my measurement at about 19 cm high, 44 cm wide with a depth of about 26 cm. It’s grey-black and silver, and looks a little like the front bumper of an 80s car. It does take up quite a lot of desk space but as long as that’s not a problem, who buys a printer for looks anyway? The sturdy design is also reassuring for someone as accident prone as myself – I’ve cause the untimely demise of many a printer!
To summarise, the Epson R360 gives you a lot for your money, not just in terms of size but also what it does. It’s no oil painting, but for the price I don’t think many other printers could come close in terms of performance.
