Epson R245 Detailed Information - Reviews - Driver Downloads - Ink Cartridge Supplies - Manuals

I recently bought my inkjet Epson R245 printer as a replacement for my Epson C66 printer. The printer was a refurbished model from Epson which I purchased for £49 last month (unfortunately I think the previous owner smoked so it does reek a bit, YUK!).
Anyway, the printer it self is great, fast, reliable, good quality print outs and easy to use. It incorporates a little LCD screen and a memory card reader so that you can print direct form your card, it also has a USB slot so it is also possible to print from your camera or phone or whatever. It also has function buttons which lets you select paper/printing quality, paper size and also the number of copies you wish to print. As these functions are all contained within the printer it self, it is not necessary to turn your computer on to do any printing, handy if you're computerphobic. The LCD screen also displays the ink levels at the press of a few buttons, also head cleaning and other facilities can be accessed through the panel, handy as it saves turning your computer on. Technical spec: Up to 5760 x 1440 dpi resolution
Up to 20 pages per min (black)
Up to 19 pages per min (color)
3.8cm color LCD screen
Print photos direct from memory card or Pict-Bridge
Individual ink cartridges.

Although the card reader and printing functions on the printer it self are handy for some quick prints, I prefer to see my photos on a large screen and enhance them on Photoshop, so to be honest the only thing I use the card reader for is as a means of transferring photos from my memory card to my computer. Which is useful as it saves me plugging in cables etc into my computer and camera. The only problem with this is the transfer speed is not brilliant, so if you have a serious camera which takes large pictures, or if you just have a lot of pictures, you may find yourself getting impatient. The actual print outs produced by the printer are good but not brilliant, if your expecting lab quality prints for your photos you WILL be disappointed. The colors are often incorrect, i.e. different from the computer screen, and can be a little grainy even in photo quality mode. The printer is good however on speed, and the quality of document print outs, i.e. text prints, so for printing homework or reports its ideal.
The inks available for the R245 are:
Black: T0551
Cyan: T0552
Magenta: T0553
Yellow: T0554

A full set of original cartridges are around £25, and will last a fair time, depending on what your printing, I managed to print a 100 page document (full text) with around a quarter of black ink remaining. It is possible to use compatible cartridges with the R245, which are much much cheaper, usually less than £10 for a full set ! ! However, be warned, I used compatible cartridges for my C66 for around 2 years, and eventually the printer failed, so it depends on how much printing your doing as to which cartridges you use, as its oblivious you could save a lot of money but it could mess your printer up too. I recommend using the originals with the R245, as they are not too expensive (C66 originals are £45 for a full set ! !) and will last considerably longer than compatible cartridges.
The software which comes with the printer includes the printer driver and a creativity suite (don't use the suite so no comments on that sorry). The driver enables you to monitor ink levels, carry out printer maintenance and of course change printer settings, such as paper type, print quality etc. The software is very user friendly and includes step-by-step instructions just in case you get stuck. Overall the printer offers a range of functions, is reasonably priced and wont let you down, however DO NOT buy this printer for photo quality printing, it just wont cut it.
