A Review From A Customer
The 120C I currently use (59.99 from Comet 23/3/07) outperforms the big HP colour printer we bought in 1999 for 596.64 in every respect except not doing A3 printing. All the Brothers used the same 900 series cartridges and were comparable in print quality although the newer ones are both cheaper and quicker.
The fax machines are frustrating in defaulting to Fax and you have to remember to switch this off for printing but this is a minor problem once one is used to it. The other important quirk is that paper will not reload after a paper jam is cleared and it is best to remove and reinsert the power cable to get it to restart. This piece of advice is not in the handbook. Most of the fax machines do not have photo slots but my little DPC120C does and is a grand machine. It has fantastic features and can be calibrated for professional printing. My only gripe with it is that the truly excellent handbooks and website do not tell you how to do this.
The machines run as good quality black or coloured copiers. The document feed on the top of the 120C came in especially handy when I was submitting a thesis and needed to do lots of copying.
Print quality is excellent for all normal purposes. Genuine Brother ink is relatively dear but I have had no problems at all with Internet-ink compatible cartridges, which I am told is the same ink. A set of ink cartridges at 10 for about £25 will do many thousands of copies, black or coloured and it is especially helpful to have separate colour cartridges. I have found some compatibles at about 1.99 each but they were not as reliable as yours. Some would not produce ink – a serious deficiency.
I was for a while a member of a photographic club. I guess most of them had top notch A3 printers but print quality was not noticeably better – it was the cameras that produced the pin sharp imagery. My main wish would be to have the option of dye type inks at reasonable price so that one could print permanent photos like the Epson’s. The Brother prints are fine when files but fugitive in daylight over a period.
