I have a HP 5180 printer and on the whole am very satisfied with it. It makes qutie a lot of noise when warming up but otherwise I find it easy to use and so far have not had any trouble with it. I have had it 4 years. Marks out of 10 = 9.- My HP Photosmart C5180 IS VERY GOOD PRINTER WITH MANY USEFUL FEATURES BUT EXPENSIVE ON INKS. 8/10 - HP Photosmart C5180 - All in One For the home or small business this is a good all rounder with high quality printing when required. Its six cartridge ’mix’ provides excellent quality photos - note however it will only operate with OEM cartridges! The machine can turn out copies and scans quickly. The body is designed to accept a range of digital memory cards enabling direct printing from the card without the use of USB cables. The printer has a small display window that offers useful information for problem solving and selection of functions coupled with an up to the minute picture of your ink levels! On the odd occasion the paper jams inside it is easy to access and remove without breaking fingers! Cartridges are very simple to replace too. I would rate this printer highly; the down side would be the usual moan about the cost of replacement cartridges. 9 out of 10 for me. Bob McConnell FROM THE EDITOR :- Our compatible cartridges have been tested on the HP Photosmart C5180, no problems. - I have now purchased a multifunction HP 5180 Photosmart, it was an offer I could not refuse, to reduce the amount of equipment on my desk. So far this HP has proven to have slightly better quality print than the Epson C62 and the photo reproduction is superb as is the copier/scanner. As I have only had this unit for a short time I have not been able to evaluate it fully but on it;s present showing it has all the hallmarks of being a worthy replacement for the Epson. Only time will tell. - The HP Photosmart C5180 is an exceptional piece of equipment, the scanner and separate controls all work without crashing the computer even if connected! The software supplied is also very good for basic touchups and photo printing with the photo fix and ink saver devices. Would not hesitate to buy another one, I would give it 9/10 Rod Perkins - HP Photosmart C5180. Very stylish white with easy to change cartridges. A good photo printer with a quality scanner in the lid. Made really 1st class because now I can buy very quality cheap ink. John B Sidebottom - The HP Photosmart C5180 printer production quality is excellent at a high speed which we were not used to with previous Epson model. Biggest draw back which we have seen on other world web sites is the high price and low capacity of the HP ink cartridges. - HP Photosmart C5180 All in One. Overall an excellent multi function machine. A fairly steep learning curve to master all its many settings and option. The end result of all its functions are hard to criticise. Excellent printing quality and photographic reproduction is flawless. - Excellent photo print quality, as is document printing Easy to use with and without PC OCR could be more accurate 6 colours of which the 3 light colours expire most often 9 out of 10 - The HP Photosmart C5180 printer - nothing outstanding in its features. Prices for printers depreciate like new cars now. Given that the cost of ink is disproportionate. C5180 really gets through it – even when using eco print and black options. V annoying feature is that the ink takes a while to dry and you get smudging even when the paper is being shot out of the printer. I use it for scanning and copying and it’s really not fast enough if you want to use these features a lot. The software is a mare with MS XP (or probably more accurately MS is a nightmare with anything). It gets v confused and needs PC reboot and/or printer reboot once or twice a week. - The HP Photosmart C5180 is a very good printer, good drivers and software for Linux, though not bundled with the printer. Easy to use, very good quality output. A bit heavy on it’s ink consumption, though refills aren’t **too** expensive. 8/10. - Superb printer, bought because it is ethernet enabled, it is plugged into our wireless router so that all our computers and laptops can print to it. It will also take the main camera data cards so that printing can be done without using the computer. The print quality is second to none being finely detailed with vibrant colours. The scanner works well giving good quality copies of documents or photo’s, but when doing reprints it introduces a slight pink hue to the finished prints. I have yet to see how your compatible inks perform, they are on order and will be tested as soon as they arrive. I would have no hesitation in recommending this printer to anyone who runs a small home network or just wants a photo quality printer. (I paid £99 from Comet). Paul Johnstone - Good overall machine which uses ink at a fast rate. Doesn't suffer paper jams usually but when it does is easy to clear. I had the machine as a warranty replacement, upgrading from a previous cheaper HP printer. After sales service from HP is useless and I have spent too much time trying to use the HP web / on line help system and non functioning software upgrade system. Scanning and copying is good quality.The inbuilt photo print paper tray is a plus. - The HP Photosmart C5180 is a brilliant printer, scans copies and prints extremely well even from Linux. Only down side is that it seems to drink ink like it's going out of fashion. - Impossible to buy ink for this printer( HP C5180 All in one printer scanner copier() except on web.. I definitely would not recommend this printer. Although the copies are excellent the ink is much too expensive and on amazon marketplace the postage to Northern Ireland is ridiculous sometimes £12.50 for a pack. This website has no extra charge for postage and sells compatible cartridges which I am a bit wary of after experience with my last printer. Am going to give it a try though . Bernie - The HP C5180 is a very stylish looking printer that boasts many functions for a relatively small price tag. However, it is far from simple trying to use all of these functions. THE GOOD: Very efficient 6 colour cartridge printing system that produces excellent quality photos using HP VIVERA technology. Also means that you only replace the colours that have ran out, as opposed to all colours with a tri-colour cartridge. Two separate paper trays - one for up to A4 (100 sheet max) and one for up to 100*150mm or 6*4" (25 sheet max). This means that you do not have to take all of the paper out of the main tray in order to print photos. USB or Ethernet connection and can be used over a wireless network by connecting the Ethernet port to a router. Can scan & copy without the use of a computer. For the most part, the software that comes with the HP is very powerful, allowing you to print many different things; borderless A4 photos to books with left or right edge bindings. THE BAD: Original HP VIVERA ink cartridges are extremely expensive; £10 for a 6ml cartridge compared to £3.49 for 13ml (internet-ink.co.uk) and both produce same quality prints. After using for just over 1 year, some of the buttons on the front panel on my printer stopped working (5 in total). I contacted HP, but they said that because the warranty had expired, it was nothing to do with them. HP support is one of the worst out there. Sometimes when printing photos, the photo tray gets stuck inside the printer and does not return to its standby position, this is very difficult and time consuming to fix. When I have my HP printer set as the default printer, for some reason, Microsoft Word & Excel continually go into a "not responding" state, rendering them un-usable. The only way to get round this is to change the default printer to something other than the HP, meaning you always have to change the printer when printing- something really annoying when printing large quantities. The printer has to go through a long and noisy "warming-up" process whenever you turn it on and cannot print until this has done OVERALL: If everything in this printer worked as it should, this would be a really, really good printer. Unfortunately, this is not the case and instead, it is awkward and difficult to use at the best of time. Score out of 10 = 4 Ross Dowie
