Your Reviews So Far

The Epson DX8400 is advertised and sold as an "All in One" multi-purpose printer, scanner, copier, which I feel is a description that is in contravention of the Sales of goods Act and is unfit for the problem free use of all the purposes described. If you bought a VCR/DVD recorder/player you wouldn't expect it not to function AT ALL just because there wasn't a VHS tape or a DVD inserted would you ?

Yet this printer WILL NOT FUNCTION AT ALL as a Scanner should it either run out of ink or it doesn't recognise ANY of the cartridges ... it will lock you out of any and all functions !

Why do you need ink at all in order to scan ? In the six months I've had mine it's been an experience that has destroyed my faith and confidence in Epson. I shall never buy anything Epson again.

What a complete and utter load of rubbish! The Ink cartridges are so small you can’t use this for anything but the occasional home print item otherwise it will cost you a small fortune. Even after I loaded new cartridges and ran a nozzle check the ink indicator level was down to ¾  I bought this printer in good faith because my old Epson 600 (very old) was reliable, cheap to run and a complete workhorse. I’ve had the old 600 running quite literally all night (night after night) printing quality colour brochures without any problems. Thank goodness I kept it as it has now been re-instated as my no.1 printer and it’s still running strong. Anybody out there want to buy a newish Epson DX8400 ? I would be happy to sell it for LESS than the price of their replacement cartridges, VERY HAPPY !

FROM THE EDITOR :- Due to the technology Epson use in their printers if you fully empty your previous cartridge then you will also empty the pipes between the cartridge and the print heads. These pipes will then be refilled with some of the ink from your new cartridge creating an illusion of lost ink. Although the level displays as 3/4, most of the missing 1/4 will still be in your printer and available to print. On a separate note if you are printing large amounts for business use I would suggest investigating colour laser printers.

Hi there, I’ve had my Epson DX 8400 for two years, unfortunately I’m not impressed with it, it’s slow to scan and I mean slooow, it doesn’t accept non Epson inks without a big arguement as it detects anything other than Epson ink cartridges. I had a Lexmark printer before I got this pile of junk, it was far better and quicker, I thought I’d upgrade to a better quality printer and gave my lovely Lexmark away. I won’t buy an Epson anything not ever again. B. Naylor.
FROM THE EDITOR :- Our compatible cartridges won`t give you any error messages at all. The printer will think you have installed original Epson ink cartridges.

I bought the Epson DX8400 after having a RX425 – I wish I hadn’t! The ink cartridges are so small, printing A4 size photos swallows the ink up in no time. The RX425 was so much better and more cost effective. Epson’s prices for ink are a right rip off. i rate the DX8400 at a lowly 4 out of 10

The Epson DX8400 is a good printer, no problems so far. A better and more reliable paper feed than previous printer Epson CX3200 .In practice the DX8400 is easier to operate than the CX3200.
Good all round machine the only problem is the noise.

I just recently bougth an Epson DX8400 and think it is wonderful. The cartridges are a decent price and the Epson ink is smudge proof and non fade which is good if you like to print loads of photos. The colour printing is very good, I have been extreemly impressed with a number of things downloaded. This is a multifunction machine - scan, print, copy and has a good selection of software to help you do exactly what you wish to do. I am not  a computer genious but this printer is easy to use and has plenty of information to help you along. I especially like the facility that allows me to print from the memory card in my camera. The LCD on the control panel allows you to use the printer without being connected to the computer. I bought mine direct from Buyepson.co.uk for £59.99 incl p&p, which is much cheaper than any other comparable machine. I would recommend anyone looking for a machine that does it all, with or without the computer, to buy one of these.

I bought this printer about six months ago from Comet for £99.99 and three weeks later my brother-in-law bought the same one on special offer from Asda at the reduced price of £49.99 !!
After a few teething problems it is working well but the small capacity of the ink cartridges means frequent 'ink changes'. I am about to try Internet-ink.co.uk....so hopefully that problem will be worked out too.

What Do You Think About The Epson DX8400? I don't. I will not buy another one. Its too tempermental about compatable inks. Too fussy about the way it paper has to be loaded.

What a brilliant multi-purpose machine! Except that it is totally reliant upon you feeding it copious amounts of  genuine Epson Ink. e.g. if you apparently run out of a colour it 'locks-out'  preventing any of its other functions. YOU CANNOT EVEN PRINT IN BLACK ONLY! I have just bought a colour pack Epson TO71 at an extortionate price of  £38.86! (PC World, 16/3/09, The three colours are 3x 5.5ml, black 1x 7.4ml) And before anyone says "Ah! but what about cheaper, non-genuine, high  capacity cartridges?" - forget it, they will work for a short time before  requiring repeated nozzle cleans & replacement. I bought a a pack of twenty, you live and learn!
The cartridges must have some 'chipped intelligence' which monitor state and time or am I paranoid? Back to the review - this printer I rate at a generous 3 out of 10! -  I hope to be able to afford a new non-Epson replacement in the near future.

Disgusted

FROM THE EDITOR :- Our compatible cartridges don't require any additional nozzle cleans to the original cartridges.

I do keep trying to pursuade people to use these compatibles because I think they are fantastic - have converted one or two!!  Not sure if this is good for your sales figures though.

I have had this machine for about 6 months having had HP and Lexmark multipurpose before. I thought the Lexmark was just a cash cow for ink cartridges, and was attracted by the Epson's separate cartridges to replace individually.  BUT...in common with other reviewers I am SO frustrated by the machine locking me out of all functions because one cartridge (cyan in my case) being out of ink.  It won't even do black!  Serious drawback which means you have to have all cartridges in stock and ready to install at any time.  I also find that the paper feed is primitive, with a tendency for the paper to fall over backwards and get bent - I prefer HP's flatbed paper feed.  4/10

I have now had my Epson DX8400 for a year and has been one of the better printers I have ever invested in.  I have experienced NO problems when using compatible ink cartridges that I have purchased, and tend to find that the life of the cartridges are very good – and with two children printing anything and everything that can only be good news for my pocket!  Fantastic idea that the colour cartridges are separated too – you only need to replace the one that has run out, and yes, because of the machine not working when an ink cartridge runs out, I ALWAYS tend to have spare cartridges to hand – with the compatibles being so inexpensive there is no reason why I shouldn’t!!!  Excellent, not only as a printer, but as a photocopier and scanner as well.  From my experience I can only recommend this particular machine – previous machines owned were HP printers and they were a complete nightmare – problems with paper feed, would NOT use compatible cartridges ONLY genuine cartridges and at between £25 - £30 each were costing me a small fortune.  Each to their own opinion, but I personally could not recommend this machine highly enough.

I have found this to be an excellent all round machine which I use mostly for photographic and art work. I have been using Epson for twenty years without trouble. My only gripe with the 8400 is that it will not readily accept thin card for printing i.e business card. I have recently changed to Internet-ink compatibles and so far have had very good results especially with the XL cartridges as photos take a lot of ink especially at top quality printing. My previous supplier recently phoned me to ask why I had not been ordering lately. He was a little put out when I told him that I was getting more than twice the ink for very little extra cost.

Greetings! - I got mine very cheap from Epson themselves, because my old printer broke & was B.E.R. When I discovered the price & capacity of the ink-tanks, and how often they require replacing, I'm surprised that Epson don't just give the machines away. At £27,300 a gallon, it must be more costly than Moon-water. The machine works OK, but is a bit lugubrious, very fussy about paper-loading. At least it seems ready for action after long periods of disuse, whereas my earlier one wasted more ink on head-cleaning than printing. Now it's out of its guarantee period, I will change to internet-ink compatibles, & when the machine bites the dust, a Canon. No more Epsons or Lexmarks. HP have gone from Rolls-Royce to Trabant in ten years. Epson is to printers what Gordon Brown was to national prosperity. Pip-pip

I am quite happy with this machine. I purchased mine at below £50 from a well-known high street supermarket.  Carrying it in a shopping basket was fun.  I did have problems at the beginning with the driver and applications software. So far on 4 computers with 2 DX8400 and its predecessor I have found that I had to remove and then re-install all the software a number of times before the DX8400 would work correctly. I found it was best to use the software at the Epson website. Oh yes, the American one. That web site had all the up-to-date drives and application's software. Many software vendors have better US web sites for product support. May be it's their attitude to customer service and litigation. I do have an issue where the software decides you want to buy epson ink cartridges and takes you to their website.  Also where it decides that because you have a low ink level not to print. Then tell you it doesn't recognise the ink cartridge.

I've had my Epson DX8400 and, apart from an initial panic attack when it wouldn't accept my Internet-Ink Compatible Cartridges, (I contacted Internet-Ink and they helped me resolve the issue), it has been fine - touch wood. I use my printer a lot as I carry out a lot of research for my work and I don't have any problems with it at all. I would say, if I had to buy Epson cartridges that may be a different story. I have bought my ink from Internet-ink for several years now and have had no complaint what so ever. The staff is helpful and very friendly and as long as they keep providing the ink from the Epson DX8400, I'll keep using it. I think I've worked my through all the Epson printers over the years and won't be changing in the near future. Take care and happy printing whatever you are using.
